So, here's a question:
Have you noticed that you never hear a boxer or a wrestler or such say things like "My boxing works" or "In such and such situation I'm confident my boxing will win"? In the event there are hostilities, you are likely to hear "I'll kick your ass, *@#$^%" if anything. Later, you are unlikely to hear the same person say "I got into a confrontation today and I'm glad to say that my boxing worked", or "I used my boxing successfully". However, substitute the name of many MAs, and almost any TMA, and I'm sure you've all heard people say (or type) such things. Why do you suppose that is? I'm not drawing any conclusions or disparaging anyone or anything, just putting it out there for discussion.

there was a guy i knew in my school, who was a fantastic under 18's amatuer boxer. Our families had some history together, our grandads boxed together and my uncle and his dad boxed together. I chose MA over boxing so i never really got to know him very well. (<----nothing to do with the story, just trying to set the scene
)Anyway he was a skinny guy probably around 60kg at the time, but was reknowed at the school because of his boxing, he also had 2 very attractive older sisters which of course caused some problems. One time he got into a situation where he told a guy in year above us to back off. The guy wasnt too impressed and got 7 o f his mates and waited for him at the bus stop. they were all about 17yo, and the boxer was 15 or 16yo. Some of the kids apperently had hammers but i didnt see any evidence of this. They ambushed him in full view of a double decker bus full of school kids. He ended up knocking 3 out, breaking 2 noses, and basically causing alot of blood. He was a bit beat up too but nothing compared to the amount he dished out. He didnt need to brag because there was a bus load of kids who did that for him. I think that boxers dont brag, because it would be stating the obvious, it works because it is simple. Theres no mystisism or tricks just what obviously works. I think TMA brag when they effectively use their art as they have probably had alot of ppl, disrespect there art and say 'that wont in the real world cos' some will just do...' or whatever. Mcdojos are to blame for this, because at every school there is 9 yr old squirt claiming to be a BB in a mystical art who can kill a guy with one finger, then he has his head knocked off by the school bully and every one is like 'HAHA karate doesnt work for shit!'

Most boxers use sucker punches and end fights quickly in the street. In the street, a sucker punch is an awesome tool. Not too many people can recover from a sucker punch.

if you take the punch tho youre in a better position.
say you swing for someone and hit him dead on and he doesnt drop. he's now pissed off and goes for you while youre thinking "oh.. that didnt do as much as i expected" and you get your ass kicked.... if you can take the sucker punch and grin, it upsets them somewhat and pisses you off. anger is useful when fighting lol |

On the other hand, if this forum is any indicator, you hear boxers/grapplers/etc. talk all day long about how much other arts suck. They start threads to bash other arts, they enter forums about other arts and bash there, they even hijack threads about aspects of other arts and hijack same for bashing. Honestly, is there anyone here who hasn't heard enough 'my art is teh l33t, your art suxxorz' crap? Let it go already.

Really? I think you are thinking about young BJJ guys. And how much TMA bashing has not been preceeded by some outrageous and insubstantiated claims by TMA airheads? TMA deserves more level-headed representatives than are usually found on such forums.
