Default More on Jazz

Wynton Marsalis.

People automatically think of him only as a jazz trumpeteer. That's obviously his favorite style. My favorite cd of his "Hot House Flowers"

Marsalis is a master at the trumpet. He can hit high range ( anything higher than C-above the staff with ease), he can imrpov with amateurs and when they mess up, he can correct their mistake in mid play by adjusting to them but he's not limited to bee bop, big bands or ballads. He can hang with the classical artists.

I've got a recording of him playing "Flight of the Bumblebee" under 1:00. For classical trumpeteers this is the equivalent of running 1 mile under 5:00. He's done allmost flawless renditions of Carnival of Venice and Haydn's Trumpet Concerto - Standards in classical Trumpet.

If it hasn't been done allready, I'd love to hear some duet arrangements of Marsallis and Koennick Jr. Yeah, brass + voice are unusual, but they're creative enough.

The Marsalis family has produced some amazing musicians! Ellis and Branford are also amazing. When I lived in New Orleans I saw Wynton perform a set of Thelonius Monk and Jelly Roll Morton's stuff, before finishing up with some of his own. I forget whether it's Branford or Ellis but one of them has a track called "Jungle Groove" that uses 3 drummers to make some of the nastiest beats around. Jason Marsalis has been making quite a name for himself as well. One of the amazing things about New Orleans is that a lot of families- like the Marsalis clan- have a strong tradition of studying music. You can still hear the Hot 8 Brass Band play on a regular basis, which Louis Armstrong himself started way back when. Naturally it isn't the orirginal members, but they're all grandschildren, nephews, cousins or some relation to the original members. There are lots of N.O. locals like that.

Jungle Groove ---> Probably Ellis Marsalis? Branford is a sax player, I believe.

Actually I just took a minute to google it and it was Branford. He wrote the piece, he wasn't playing the drums.
