It's interesting that Kitano Takeshi is seen in North America as an "action/drama" type of guy. In Japan he's seen more of as a comedian, something you get a bit of a glimpse of in Zatoichi. And in Takeshi's Castle.

Old boy is supherb. I loved that shit...the director also did a spot aside Takashi Miike and Fruit Chan in 3 Extremes...which kicks ass.

Also, Old Boy is part of a collection of revenge stories by Park Chan-Wook, "Lady Vengence" And "Sympathy for Mr. Vengence".

Sympathy for Mr. Vengence is even more desperate and depressing than Old Boy...I balled my fucking eyes out at the end...this line sums up the movie;
"I know you're probably a good guy, and that's why you must understand that I have to kill you".

Harsh show.

That's true to a point, but he's also the man who starred in Sonatine and, of course, Zatoichi which, although it has some comedic elements, including the geta tap dance and him falling over at the end, is primarily a very dark thriller.
BTW, did you know that his comedic persona is known as "Beat Takeshi", and his action persona as "Kitano Takeshi"? He also writes novels and scripts, and the credits for Zatoichi ran:
Writer/Director: Beat Takeshi
Starring: Kitano Takeshi
It seems to me that he likes to keep his two persona separate. (Maybe he's suffering from a personality disorder.

)
Also, as Beat Takeshi, he fronts a show called "Unbelievable!", which is like a Ripley's Believe It or Not...
