Robert Scheer: Silencing Saddam
http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/...sein_executed/ Posted on Dec 29, 2006 By Robert Scheer It is a very frightening precedent that the United States can invade a country on false pretenses, depose its leader and summarily execute him without an international trial or appeals process. This is about vengeance, not justice, for if it were the latter the existing international norms would have been observed. The trial should have been overseen by the World Court, in a country that could have guaranteed the safety of defense lawyers, who, in this case, were killed or otherwise intimidated. The irony here is that the crimes for which Saddam Hussein was convicted occurred before the United States, in the form of Donald Rumsfeld, embraced him. Those crimes were well known to have occurred 15 months before Rumsfeld visited Iraq to usher in an alliance between the United States and Saddam to defeat Iran. Related Truthdig Reports Robert Scheer on Saddam’s Conviction Juan Cole on Saddam’s Trial The fact is that Saddam Hussein knew a great deal about the United States’ role in Iraq, including deals made with Bush’s father. This rush to execute him had the feel of a gangster silencing the key witness to a crime. At Nuremberg in the wake of World War II the U.S. set the bar very high by declaring that even the Nazis, who had committed the most heinous of crimes, should have a fair trial. The U.S. and allies insisted on this not to serve those charged, but to educate the public through a believable accounting. In the case of Saddam, the bar was lowered to the mud, with the proceedings turned into a political circus reminiscent of Stalin’s show trials. Iraqi state television Iraqi state television broadcasted footage of Saddam’s hanging. It seems to me that Saddam still had something to say, even when the rope was around his kneck. Judge for yourselves in the mobile phone video. http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=863ce7d4a3

I saw the cell phone video of the hanging. Even after all Saddam did I found it very disturbing!
I also clicked on all the links. Very interesting. What goes around comes around, and one day the US is going to pay for everything our leaders did to other countries. (and it will be worse then 9/11) Last edited by mysteryninja; 01-01-2007 at 08:13 AM. Reason: added a line |

Okay,
You can say anything you want about the U.S., Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney, whoever in the U.S. you feel like vilifing, you can go ahead and do that but lets have a little clarity. Let's get it straight: Saddam Hussien killed thousands of people. Many thousands. He had civilians killed. he had hundreds of people tortured to death. Whatever is happening in Guantanamo bay... Saddam's Abu Gharib makes that look like Sunday school. Husseins Abu Gharib makes the United Sates' Abu Gharib look like a petting zoo. Hussein's Iraq burned people to death. Tore people apart. Shot them in the streets and then shot their families, too. There isn't anything you can say about the United States - true or false - that changes the fact that Saddam Hussein didn't even start to get what he had coming.

I don't disagree. I think that bush, cheney and rumsfeld should also be charged since they armed him. This latest war has taken about 600,000 Iraqi lives and probably 5000 Americans if you count those that died after leaving the battlefield.

No. Only those that have an enlightened membership and a proper forum for such discussions.

I just mean people that can read between the lines, think outside the box, question the official story. Not the neocon nut-hugging types that you find on some forums.
