I read the article and a few of the first posts, but nothing in between because i'm taking a five-minute break from writing a final paper, so i apologize if the parallel has already been drawn, but this isn't just hip-hop, it's done to black culture in general. there's a great collection of essays titled "The Devil and Dave Chapelle" that i strongly recommend to anyone interested in this. The corporate business side of things is exactly why Dave Chapelle turned down millions of dollars and went back to doing stand-up. He realized that by simply participating in the business he was in creative control was being wrested from him and instead of laughing at how stupid it was to think in terms of stereotypes (the original intent of the show) he was being asked to use stereotypes in a way that made them acceptable.

True and excellent point. I imagine there are many more folks who wanted to be execs but couldn't make it and could certainly benefit by falling back on a college education.

Anyway, anyone who wants to listen to hip hop without the profanity can just set up a free account at pandora.com, create "stations" based on your favorite artists and songs, and check off the "no profanity" link. This is for personal use and not over a loudspeaker at your gym, but it's awesome. I don't think they screen for misogyny and violence, however.
