Looks like our buddy Hardball had a birthday today. He was one of about ten members that turned a year older.
So for that anniversary I humbly submit that on this day in 374 AD Halley's Comet approached within 0.0884 astronomical units (AUs) of Earth You probably don't remember that?  In 1853 Cincinnati became the 1st US city to pay firefighters a regular salary... In 1863 the first wartime conscription law in US went into effect. In 1873 the British White Star steamship Atlantic sank off Nova Scotia, more than 550 were lost. In 1876 the first official National League baseball game was held (Boston-6, Philadelphia-5) In 1905 British East African Protectorate became the colony of Kenya. In 1945 Okinawa was the scene of the last great U.S. amphibious campaign in World War II. U.S. army and marine forces landed there and fought one of the bloodiest campaigns of the war, while the navy offshore suffered heavy damage in resisting attacks by kamakazi...
