Anyone been following this? The ruckus started a while ago, so I'll post some links to get everyone up to speed. It's getting a lot of press here in Washington today, so I'm interested to hear what the rest of the country is saying. Opinions here are sometimes decidedly skewed...
Nuclear Weapons Programs - Syria The above is a good link for the backstory, at least as far back as Bolton's point of view in 2002. Israelis ‘blew apart Syrian nuclear cache’ - Times Online This one and the next one detail the actions on target, from capturing actual nuclear material to verify that's what they were dealing with to the leveling of the facility. Israelis seized nuclear material in Syrian raid - Times Online US to release Syria nuke details 'soon' - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) American news is being tight lipped in most cases... Here's a more complete report from the Boston Globe: N. Korea linked to Syrian nuclear plant - The Boston Globe I don't know if anyone here has ever read anything by an author named Vince Flynn, but he had a book called Protect and Defend. It's an action hero thriller type book, and I swear this whole scenario looks like something right off those pages - right down to the secret video they shot of the inside of the facility. Fiction aside, this poses a big problem, diplomatically speaking. Progress with North Korea is likely to get complex again - if it doesn't grind to a halt completely. Focus might shift once more to Iran's nuclear program, which means things may again get tense there. And lest we forge the main players, Israel and Syria will likely get a little more tense now that the story is widespread. This sort of thing tends to wake up sleeping hostilities. Look for more Hezbollah rocket attacks in Israel in the next few days and weeks. Any other opinions? |
