I post at defend primarily because of my interest in the martial arts, but also because of several related topics, whether closely related (diet/nutrition, training, combat, war, weapons etc.) or looseley related (politics, philosophy, policy).
Sometimes we go off tangent (What's the hottest foreign chick thread? Animal fights, Beer, Dating etc.) but since this message board is probably 95% male, alot of these topics are acceptable and we don't stand in denial. The tone of most posts here are straight forward with minimal trolling. Most trolls get trolled back and then thrown out. Topics tend to be focused, instructional, provide feedback/progress and supportive. From time to time, Tim Mousel posts and gives us good, usefull information about MA topics. Mike B has posted alot of practical information about firearms training, combat drills and a brief look into psyops, The Boar Clan provides a wealth of knowledge about internal Chinese martial arts and some strange but usefull topics (Boar's read some really, really interesting stuff). And last but not least we've got jubaji. PS - gregi is too hardcore for this thread.

There's a bunch of cool dudes here, and some douchebags too but that's life. I been getting a lot of knowledge from the seasoned Martial Arts veterans on here.

Not only do I learn here but I also am able to work things out in discussions I otherwise wouldn't understand just studying on my own.
It helps to explain things because sometimes someone will ask a question you never thought to ask yourself. Sometimes an explanation given by someone else helps you see something in a different light. There have been some great threads and debates on here that really help a lot of people as well as myself. As Chris said there are some great veterans as well as some huge douchebags.

Because I have WAY too much free time and I'm arrogant enough to think I have something worth sharing?
Nah... I'm here to learn like many others. :P

Thanks for the shout-out, TY. I haven't been posting much at all, but I lurk pretty often.

When I was working in Singapore I sent an e-mail to Sifu Burton Richardson asking about MA instructors there. He told me that his previous contacts were no longer there, but he pointed me in the direction of this forum.
I spent most of the years 2000-2005 in various parts of Asia, and I've used this forum to get information wherever possible about people to train with. Now that I'm back in Canada for the foreseeable future, I'm content to lurk. And pretend I'm a UFO freak who likes to post pictures of himself drinking Newcastle ale.

I post here because it's a compulsive habit that I've engaged in since I was roughly 16 years old. I like it because I can joke and at the same time learn things and throw my 2 cents in on important discussions.
If defend net was a place, and not a psuedo place videodrome programmed to make me start killing tv executives...it would be the bar from cheers. Mushrooms? anyone?? |
