MSNBC.com U.S. removes 'yellowcake' from Iraq Last major stockpile from Saddam's nuclear efforts arrives in Canada The Associated Press updated 5:57 p.m. CT, Sat., July. 5, 2008 The last major remnant of Saddam Hussein's nuclear program a huge stockpile of concentrated natural uranium reached a Canadian port Saturday to complete a secret U.S. operation that included a two-week airlift from Baghdad and a ship voyage crossing two oceans. The removal of 550 metric tons of "yellowcake" the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment was a significant step toward closing the books on Saddam's nuclear legacy. It also brought relief to U.S. and Iraqi authorities who had worried the cache would reach insurgents or smugglers crossing to Iran to aid its nuclear ambitions. If saddam would have been left in place it would only be a matter of time fbefore he reactivated his WMD programs.

I'd imagine that they were waiting for a time when they could be relatively certain they could move the stuff without someone trying to blow up the containing vessel and create a huge problem.
I also would imagine it's pretty hard to be in conspicuous moving that much radioactive material through a war zone.

Also where was the Mosad while he was stockpiling these nuclear materials. The Jews in Israel go ape shit if any Muslim country so much as lets out a fart with a higher than normal radiation content.
Now there's a claim that Iraq had a stockpile they didn't make public. Pardon my slight amount of skepticism, but I think we are entitled to it, barring the fact that these seem to be the only WMD's found in 6 years anywhere in Iraq by U.S. , U.N., or the Mosad the middle Easts watch dogs.

Pardon my ignorance, but what African countries have nuclear capabilities?
Or more to the point where would they get nuclear material to sell to Iraq from? Haifa isn't that far from the dark continent. My understanding is that the Jewish community on that side of the world watches that region about as hawkishly as they do the mid-East due to the high musslim population there too. Not to mention the N.A.W.G.A. watches it as well. 15 days to Haifa?

My point exactly...If you can find a shitload of links to it online then you can bet your ass the world intelligence gathering agencies of every government already knows about it and has an eye or two on it.
I.E. The Mosad, C.I.A. and whatever the Russians are calling theirs today. I'm thinking we were just too embarrassed to say we gave i to him. Like all the gas he used to hit the Iranian human swarms with in the '80's.

You're right since the press says they found WMD's everyone who said there wasn't all these years is wrong and there is no way possible this could just be one of numerous cover ups that governments latter get caught with their dicks in the door when the truth comes out.
I'll stick to talking martial arts occasionally on here bye bye.

Niger and Portugal, along with uranium dioxide from Brazil, between 1979 and 1982 or so. Saddam had a nuclear reactor and enrichment facility in the early 80's that the Israelis destroyed and it was never repaired, so he had a lot of unenriched uranium yellowcake lying around and making people nervous. The United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency examined the strorage depots about once a year and put seals on them, but the seals were broken by U.S. Marines who ran across the facility and thought they found an illegal weapons cache. So it probably won't make the news, not because the story's getting buried, but because we knew it was there.
It's bad that he had it at all, but it's important to note that it's not a WMD (or even usable as a dirty bomb) until it gets enriched, and his enrichment facilities had been destroyed and all the enriched uranium he bought from Russia and Italy had been removed from the country. Yellowcake is less than 1% U-235, reactor grade uranium about 4% U-235, and weapons grade about 90% U-235, whcih requires an enrichment facility and massive amounts of time and money to produce. The hoopla wasn't over whether he already had yellowcake; he did, and we knew it. The hoopla was over whether he was trying to buy more yellowcake from Niger when he didn't even have any legitimate use for the yellowcake he already had, and whether he was in possession of actual ready-to-use WMD's. |
