Bas Rutten started his Martial Arts career at the late age of 21, and he quickly discovered that Martial Arts was his caling. Within one and a half years he got his 1st degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. One year later, he received a 1st degree black belt in Kyokoshin Karate. Presently, he holds a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and a 5th in Kyokoshin Karate. While he was doing these two sports he also started to compete in Thai boxing. He became the Dutch champion, and fought 16 Thai boxing matches of which he won 14 by KO.

Will (the guy who won the fight) has never practiced MT..... but when I train with him, we modify our "karate kicks" b/c we realize that there is no power in a snap action ...... so we need more of a baseball bat swing.

Anyone who gets blacks in such little amount of time obviously got their belt at a mcdojo.Just because someone has a black belt doesn't make him suddenly a good fighter especially if the sensei is basically just giving away the belts.

I have never in my life heard of someone getting a black belt in two different styles within just two and a half years, that is physically and mentally impossible.

I don't believe any of this crap. If it is true he is either one unusual martial artist, just got the belt by his instructor because he had the money for testing or he is a damn good lier.

Someone doesn't become a champion of karate after just 2-3 yrs.of doing martial arts.

DKM - thanks for thwe clarification...was this a MT fight with MT rules or kick boxing fight

MTF - I have to agree actually it said BB in TKD after 1.5 yrs...and a year later BB in karate (I am not sure if that means he studied kyokushon Karate for 1 yr or 2.5yrs) the karate part is a little more suprising than TKD peple pay for private instruction and train every day it is possible, I mean I have read people stating that about TKD. But belt promotontions usually have a minimun amount of time between testing (like 3-6 months)...but money talks and well y'know

I've seen one guy get a BB in our school in under 2 years and he was very gifted and very dedicated. Even 2 years is exceptional. Considering it's Bas I think it's possible.

Physically I am capable of doing such. Reason I don't? The place I take Hapkido at right now makes you pay 30 bucks per belt test and I could have been a green belt in a month in TKD.... so that would be like 120 dollars I would have to pay for a silly belt. I got a brown one at JC Penney for like 10 bucks and it holds up my pants just fine.

Black belts are so fluid from art to art, they lose alot of meaning that they might have once had =(

a BJJ Black Belt, especially one who get's it from a Gracie Brother, takes damn near 10 years or more, thats IF you actually get it.

If someone is getting a blackbelt in 2 years, and they are going up against a BJJ guy who took 11 years (or more) to get his black belt... heh, I don't have to say.

I guess it's like getting a degree from a prestigious university, and getting a degree from a vending machine outside the supermarket.

Sounds like he is saying that doesn't it?

Well no offense to you bud, but I would have to agree.

Getting a black belt in two years is not a long time.

However I do know that in TKD any moron can get a black belt in just 2yrs and be called a master of TKD,to me that sounds pathetic and bogus.

I am not saying you aren't good at what you do,but I really doubt you are good enough to be a black belt or master if you have been in M.A for only 2 yrs..Had I been in your place I would start to think twice about my school and would be suspicious.

A black belt in any Martial Art can be attaind in a rasonable short period if one trains 6 days a week 5 hours a day

Somehow a lot of people talk about years of training, but it is actually hours of training
Even at 5 hours a day 5 days a week it takes over 5 years to really have a year of training

As far as Bas Rutten goes, we do not have MCDojo's in the Netherlands
And his 5th dan isn't Kyokushin, it is Budokai Kyokushin ( grabbling and groundfighting included)
Traditional arts usually have this longer period before getting a BB because they want to be shure that one is mentally mature/ upto it, if one already has several grades in other arts, this is often taken into account as previous training

In the US you will find a lot of people who got their first BB in one style the second in another and so on and even in Japan this isn't strange, therefore one can attain BB in certain arts very quick
