Default Why Is French Savate So Ignored?

Why is French Savate so ignored?
Even Bruce Lee was more of a Savate man from kicking range than anything else. It is so evident how he would stick out his rear hand: just like the classical Savate practitioners.

So I pose this question to you: Why is Savate so ignored to the point of being on the fringe of Martial Arts?
Is it the Savate federation to blame?
Is it because it's a European (French) art and not Asian that makes it less glamorous?

I would appreciate your views.

Even any good chess player will tell you that the french defense sucks.

I don't really know anything about savate

I was under the impression that 'savate' translated into English as "I Surrender"

Am I not correct in this line of thought?

I think the point is that most of us have heard of it but don’t know anything about it. Maybe you can direct us to some good web sites or explain a bit about it.

Obviously the savate people haven’t done a very good job of promoting it.

And besides it's french so why should we care?

Savate is out there in JKD camps. 'Specially "Classical" JKD lines.

Also, "the Savate Association" prevents professional Savate players from playing in anything else.

There are some good Savate threads on www.mma.tv a couple at www.kungfumagazine.com , and I think there is some archived stuff at http://go.to/StickGrappler

Post Re: Savate

I have always wondered the same thing, but have come to think that it is not ever-present (like karate or tkd) because no one teaches it mainstream. If it were on every corner, it could not be ignored as it is today.

But given today's martial arts climate, now is THE time for it to come out into the limilight. The current crazes all seem to be non-oriental martial arts: capoiera, Philipino knife arts, bjj (which has a judo base and roots, but doesn't associate itself directly with the oriental styles), and Krav Maga.

Hopefully it will move into mainstream.
Wouldn't you like to have your silver or golden glove in it?

If Savate starts doing well in kickboxing tournaments such as K-1 then it will become popluar. MT was not popluar untill Thai fighters went around the world kicking ass.

One very good reason is those gay suits you have to wear

If you consider that Savate or Boxe Francaise was know before Karate was introduced into Japan ( pre 1922) namely already in the 19th century, then it is strange that it isn't more popular
Although not shure, I feel that there is a thai connection in the roots of Savate

As a remark, I have my diplom for Savate Instructor A and B

Oh and Spanky, Savate is losely translated as communistic Rightwingass kicker

Where I live there are some people that practice it being there is a lot of French heritage here. I have seen it done and it just looks like a little more flashy form of MT. They do alot more spin kicks and sweeps. I think they do a little throwing as well or at least from what I saw of it. They were doing alot of spin kicks and occasionally would do a very simple takedown.

I guess Bruce Lee was wearing a gay suit (The yellow with black stripes) in "Game Of Death"?
I don't think so. Anyway.

It's really interesting that Bruce Lee's kicking style- at least in the movies-was so much infuenced by Savate; and still very few people mention this.

Here's a pretty good link on Savate:

difference between Savate and MT is that kicks have to be done from the knee so you can not swing an almost strait leg to your oponent (foute bas is a low kick)
This is actually the combination between snap and MT stylekicks I mentioned in another thread

other kicks are like karate sidekicks with windup to generate extra power (chassee)

Hand is the same as MT/KB

Oh you also wear shoes and there is a grading system

Luckely my Savatesuit was a loose fit and blue so not to gay

Darn Spanky, where is the world going to if we 2 can count on eachother?
