Thumbs down GM K.S. hyun's hapkido school-chicago

Beware of this school!

In general, the techniques taught are legitimate but this schools primary focus is financial.

Proof?

Up front, they tell you that a black belt can be achieved in three years. GM Hyun wants everyone to sign a contract. It states that you can't teach anywhere for 5 yrs after leaving the school.

What they don't tell you is that the promotional structure is based solely on attendance; NOT ABILITY. Very few achieve black belt in three years unless they come 4 or 5 days per week consistently. (they don't tell you this up front & how would you know to ask) So, when your contract is up, you are forced to sign another for an extended period just to get the BB.

Technique?

There are no tests per belt, just a test for the Black Belt itself. They teach basic technique and try to have a program where people don't get injured. Very few flip falls, etc. No ground work, everything is off the grab or basic punches/kicks & only knife defence.

Very few black belts stay once they get their belt. Why?

They don't have a BB program. I am certain that if they did, more BB would stay. How do I know? Every BB that left recently has studied somewhere else. After all; martial arts is a lifelong journey & if I am being challenged I will stay, if not, I'm gone. Simple. This school is not challenging at all.

Finally, I just finished class tonight and it was announced that the brown and red belts will take longer for promotion. (bate & switch?)

FYI-I've been to three other schools before this one, and have a BB already. My motivation is not to get a BB (I already have one) it is to get good training.

Final word.

If you want very basic self defence-and a false sense of security-get your bb here. Other wise-stay with Jiu-jitsu & boxing, etc.

Best to you...
