Starting a School in the US

Dear all,

I will be moving to the US (LA to be exact) in the next couple of weeks from Singapore.

I would like to ask if there are any "government stuffs" to take care of in order to set up a martial art school. E.g., over here, u need to be "licensed" in order to practise and teach martial arts. Any such ruling there?

The art I will be imparting is called "Kuen Do", which is based on a South East Asian version of Wing Chun, applying its principles in kickboxing art and aiki-jujitsu.

If there are anyone whose studio is underutilised whereby I can hold classes, I am prepared to discuss how we may work out a venture.

You just need standard business licenses. Nothing different from opening an Gym. Tax Id,INC or DBA kind of stuff. In the states you don't need a licence to practice or teach martial arts. Ed

What is good way too start kids in martial arts.What is the best art for kids?maybe ten or 15 all together.AgesFive and on upto Adult age.Girls and boys for sport.

??????Ben you want to start a school and want to know what styles to teach......what styles are you qualified to teach? I hope that was a joke because that is a strange question to ask if you have ranking and if you are qualified to teach or maybe I don't understand the question.

Sorry to come to this post waaaaay after the fact (pretty new to the forum) but I would recommend Mr. Graden's books to anyone thinking about running a martial arts school full or part time.

Take from it what makes sense and what you're comfortable with. There are a lot of ideas in there that will at least get you started.

I'm of the firm opinion that anyone interested in opening a martial arts school needs to do their homework and get educated before opening their doors. His books are one of many things I would recommend anyone read and investigate before starting a martial arts school.

Yea, I have his book. Hey, I was wondering does anyone know of a computer software package geared towards a martial arts school? Sorry to contribute an old thread but maybe something good can come from it.
