Default Worst Case Scenarios

Okay...lets all create hypothetical scenarios...law enforcement, military, etc.

Okay...here's one;

You are a responding officer to a distrubance. There is a lithe and unthreatening looking guy sitting on a freeway overpass...people have called in and said that he was acting strangely and pacing while talking to himself...but now that you're on scene, the guy looks rather calm...he's sitting down and appears to be staring down at the concrete. If it wasn't for the calls, you'd just have assumed he was just some punk kid.

You go over to talk to him, he doesn't respond. Not a twitch...just sits there and continues to stare off into space, in a sort of catatonic state.

What are the assumptions that an officer could make? Is this guy thinking about jumping off the overpass...or is he depressed...autistic???

You turn you're back on him? For a second???

What do you do?

(the guy is really fucked up on PCP, having a psychotic episode and is in a catatonic state at the moment you're observing him...you can't see his eyes, but they're glazed over...you don't know this...but any quick or threatening, motion will set him off, as will turning you're back on him...he doesn't have any weapons, but is highly capable of maiming or killing the officer.)
