Some people I know approached me last night about putting together an eco-challenge type of event. This one, as you might expect, would have a twist. The idea is simple:
Run a two day race across various types of terrain (mountain, river, urban, and plains) like your standard eco-challenge. Require basic skills like running, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, and rappelling in order to manage the environment itself, but add an element of survival. The scenario for this race would be that the teams (or individuals) are escaping, not racing. They would have to make it through the course, but at different stations along the way, they would have to demonstrate survival type skills as well. Maybe this is as simple as starting a fire or catching a fish, maybe something as complex as splinting a "fracture" and rigging up a transport system for a "wounded" comrade. It sounded like a lot of fun to me, and if we can get, say ten teams together, I may put this thing together in the Summertime. Has anyone ever done any adventure racing before, and would you be interested in trying something like this? If so, jump in and tell me. If not, tell me what would make it more interesting. Thanks in advance! Mike |
