the methods Taught by Mr. Fairbairn are an amalgamation of MA's he absorbed in his lifetime, what is your opinion of them? they are a mixture of everything from traditional martial arts like Bagua (1 for the CMA folks!) to plain ol' dirty streetfighting. I'll try and find some more on his methods if I can. PS anyone own a a Fairbairn Sykes knife or Appelgate knife? I do , but too bad I can't carry it though! Maybe one day there will be a concealed blade permit sigh!!!!!!!!!! |

Not really, Fairbairn got his second degree black belt in JUDO from Kano himself. (he also held rank in other arts...) The handfull of techniques from his unarmed list is actually a short one. Atemi waza that looks like "Tiger Claw" or iron palm technique, some stomping and kicking (good for boots) and overwhelming violence of action focused on inflicting serious trauma or death in the smallest amount of time. Father of the "double tap" and modern SRT and urban combatives...?? A Judo guy! Go figure.

WW2 combatives contain techniques gleaned from the mob, nearly any martial art you can name and the trench warfare techniques of WW1. Sure W.E.F. had a bb in judo and was an accomplished CMA practioner as well, but he also had lots of real world experience. You have to remember he got interested in the arts after nearly dying from injuries recieved in a shanghia streetfight. That kind of reality produces a different approach to your training and technique selection.
