Default Ak-47 vrs M-16

ok what is your opinion of this match up?
what are your experiances using either weapon?
this being the 2 most popular shoulder arms in the world atm I wanted to see the forums thoughts on them, lets get this forum back in its original mode (we have waxed philosophically long enough IMO)

Nice Analysis Mr.Mike!

I am of the same opinion as you about fmj 5.56, I have done culling on exotic game ranches and those little buggers... if they dont hit a dense vital or bone just zip on threw! I have also seen soft point and hollow point .223 used for deer sized game and boy do they work! the effects at ranges under 100 yards with an expanding 5.56 bullet are striking! so past 75-100 yards the M-16 is superior. at closer ranges the 7.62x39mm does prevail even in the cheap (in every sense of the word) AK. I have often heard that the 7.62 combloc round was ballistically equivalent to the 30-30 winchester. Isnt it great how our right to keep and bear arms helps with military applications! kinda like how car racing helped make disc brakes a standered item, etc.
I bet the Soviets never had any bugs worked out of the AK in the civilian sector! the simplicity and frugality of the AK has kept it around for a long time now and The Soviets actually switched to a 5.56x39mm for the AK-74.
I wonder what losing 6mm of case length does to the performance of that caliber? speaking of calibers Thomson Center contender had a 7mm TCU cartridge that was basically 5.56 nato necked up to 7mm. nice cartridge used one to take a good meat hog. ever known anyone to do any shooting with a Ruger mini-30 (7.62x39mm) Mike? had a chance to buy one but passed it up. I know the Ruger is an excellent firearm I should have snagged it as I am sure the mini thirty would be a better weapon for all the cheap surplus ammo out there!
