Can someone give me information on savate. Whether it is a good self defense art. And if so anyone know an instructor in philly. Does savate work well for defense in an street encounter.

I only know a little about Savate. Most of my knowledge of the art comes from internet research and training tapes. If you want to know more about Savate for the street (and are looking for training tapes), go to the Straight Blast Gym website @ http://www.straightblastgym.com. In the tapes section, there are some street Savate instructional tapes by Daniel Duby. I have them and I recommend them highly. The tapes do not go into great detail of the entire art of Savate, rather they focus on the best techniques and strategies from Savate for the street.

As far as a description of the art goes, the kicks are very similar to karate style kicks. However, more emphasis is put on kicking with the toe (with shoes on) and accuracy. Has some nasty, quick low line kicks as well (especially if you are wearing boots).

There is a hard back book which is offered through Amazon.com which is pretty decent and covers the history, different hand and foot and cane techniques of Savate. It is around $50, but it has a lot of info. Use the word Savate in the search and the author is titled Dr. It has been about 6 months since I got it and have forgotten the name of the title and author. I will have to post the title later when I get home. It has something like Das Aru or something inthe title.

I have heard very good things from my instructor and Guro Inosanto at Seminars about Savate and the power and targeting of the feet. An added plus for self defense is they practice with shoes on.

i know Master Chai would kill me for saying it but Savate is a great blend with Thai Boxing. it has the lead leg snapping kicks that Muay Thai does not. also has some very interesting methods of using the boot, legal weapons ha! but seriously, Daniel Duby is the man when it comes to Savate, check out the JKD forum and ask Bahala Na (mike) he has trained with him.

I'll save you the trouble. Harley is right about the blend of the two arts (and about Ajarn Chai killing him for saying it ) and while there are a lot of great, great savate men out there to study with, I think some of the very best are Salem Assli, Nick Saigniac, and of course, Daniel Duby. I've trained with Daniel and Salem, but not Nick, although Guro Inosanto has praised his skill. From personal experience, here's my take on things.
Daniel Duby is probably the most combative kicker I've ever trained with, let alone the best Savateur. His technique doesn't really look as clean as Salem's, but God is he fast, accurate, and deceptively powerful. He hits like he has rocks for limbs. Salem has the picturesque savate form, and has done well at blending his art with the Muay Thai, so go study with him at the Inosanto Academy if you get the chance. As for Duby, he'll be in Eugene Oregon doing a seminar soon, and if at all feasible, you should find a way to check him out. He makes Bill Wallace look like a slow motion film, and I've trained with Bill too!

Hey bahala how what are the training methods of savate like do the hit the pads alot, do the do alot of partner drills. Is there constant sparring. How do they train is my question is it a realistic approach to self defense on the street. Thanks

The grappling arts imply most fights end up on the ground. The striking arts imply all fights start standing up. The clinching arts imply the clinch can stop the striker from striking, and the grappler from taking it to the ground. The weapon arts imply the they can stop the unarmed man. A complete martial art implies any fight can go anywhere...be ready and able to go everywhere.

Please Help! I'm looking for a tape of the Calleros vs Chouref fight that was on ESPN2 (ISKF WORLD WELTERWEIGHT Championship match from Italy).

Chouref is actually Savate champ as well and it was very annoying to hear the commentary guy show his ignorance (of different rule systems) when talking about Chouref standing in the corner during rounds.

"this is obviously a psychological tactic by Chouref..." and commenting on how "bad" it is.

In Savate matches, fighters stand in the corner in between rounds. Chouref has carried this over into this Muay Thai matches.

Both MT and Savate have a great deal to offer when talking about real self-defense applications. I would tell you to do this. Find someone who has any kind of decent skills in boxe francaise. Spar them. All you have to do is FEEL one good fouete (round kick); to the thigh, stomach, I don't care anywhere. You'll realize the value of this art (when it comes to self defense) as soon as you feel the tip of your partners shoes penetrating your body. Why do I give you this advice? Because too many people are inclined to shrug something off unless they are willing to EXPERIENCE it. Also, the evasion skills that boxe francaise uses are amazing. Hope this helps. Good luck.
