Hi I got 2 Questions
1) Yesterday me and my friend sparred he punchd me in my nose not even hard it started to bleed. This isn't the 1st time it happened. So my trainer said that I should get awarm glass of water put a pinch of salt and then kinda snort itin my nose then snort it back out. And then I should increase the amount of salt accordingly. Would this help me not to have nose bleeds. And are there any side effects to this procedure. 2) While we were sparring my friend is able to do fast jercking jabs meanwhile i have a lot of problems with it. Can you give me some tips about how i should increase the speed of my punches and what exersizes should i perform in order to achieve it. Thank you for your imput. |

Never heard of the salt water nose thing...isn't it kind of freaky when your nose bleeds the first time. Don't spar for a few days.
Excercises aren't going to make a good jab. Practicing it 1,000 times will. Stand in front of a mirror and work on the jab, keeping very strict form. The jab is one of your most important punches, not only as a set up punch but also as a good way to stun your opponent. Your jab has to explode out and retract quickly and lightly. Ask your trainer to work with you; basically use your rear foot as thrust, your hip for torgue and your lats/tris for snap. If you throw your jab explosively with body weight and snap, then it will earn respect with your sparring partner. Don't allways start with single head jabs, otherwise you become too predictible and easy to counter. Jab into his gut and then at his head. Double jab to the head. Jab to the head and hook off it. Triple jab etc. Two basic defense for the jab: parry it with your right glove (assuming you are both orthodox left lead). Its just a quick slap down on his incoming jab; NOT A KARATE LOW BLOCK, just a quick light swipe to move it away from your head. You can swipe outward or inward. Another defense is catching the jab with the glove. When the jab approaches, put palm side out and let the jab hit your right palm. Make sure you put a tiny bit of tension the moment of impact, or you will slap yourself with the back of your glove. remember, his jab has his body weight and snap in it too. Hope that helps.

I agree that the best drills are the "live" ones, where you are actually practicing your jab and defense.
There are a number of options. Parrying and Catching the jab are easy options. Another drill is called "Slap & Tap". You catch the punch while slipping slightly (head behind the glove only). The instant you feel the punch touch your glove, you should fire a jab of your own. Make sure that you move forwards as you punch. Do not continue leaning away as you step in with your Jab or you will have no power. Work on slipping the punch. Bend your waist forwards slightly, so that your head slips in towards your opponents/partners punching shoulder. This is an extremely SUBTLE move! Do NOT be surprised that the punch makes slight contact with the side of your head as you slip. ITS SUPPOSED TO!!! If the punch does not brush alongside your head, you've slipped too far. After you get used to the subtle slipping motion, then add in your own simultaneous jab. Jab either to the solar plexus or the face. Make sure you don't bend too far forwards as you slip. Your weight distribution should be 50/50, and your forehead should be towards your opponents/partners shoulder. You should not be lower than that. Your head should not extend forward past your lead knee. In other words, make sure you keep your balance proper during this defense or you will be vulnerable to attack. Make sure that you keep your guard tight because slipping in this fashion could POTENTIALLY set you up for a rising knee or even a kick. This is why it is important for you to learn to fire your own jab simultaenously, to nullify your opponents follow up strike/s. Khun Kao |

Oops, I realize that I answered an unasked question.
My bad.... I have heard of the salt water thing. It seems to work, but you may want to consider why you get nosebleeds easily. Do you have a deviated semptum or something? Has your nose been broken in the past. Have a doctor check it out. Regarding the hand speed and "snap" to your punches, I agree with what others have already posted. I don't really have anything new to add.... Good Luck! Khun Kao |
