Here's a great article which I really enjoyed, although I have a little question. Guys, what's a thigh kick? Is it a round kick to the thigh? Sorry for sounding like a newb, but does anyone have a picture depicting a thigh kick?

Nice link. The thigh kick is a Thai-style round house kick thrown into the thigh of your opponent. The kick is not snapped, like TKD roundhouse (allthough a snapping roundhouse kick with the ball of the foot aimed to the thigh is good too). The kicking leg is kept allmost straight and uses the hip to drive momentum and body weight through the kick and lands with the shin smashing its target (thigh, rib cage, neck, head).
Some good fights that use the thigh kick: UFC 15: Mo Smith vs. Tank Abbot - Tank eats about 4 or 5 of Mo's thigh kicks and calls it quits. UFC 27: Pedro Rizzo vs. Severn - One thigh kick and Severn is on the ground writhing in pain. UFC 7: Ruas vs. "Polar Bear" Varelans - Ruas KOs the 300 lb Varelans with thigh kicks. Pride Grand Prix 2000?: Sakuraba vs. Royce Gracie - Sak's thigh kicks repeatedly trip up Royce and rock him. Most of Ernesto Hoosts K-1 matches - Hoosts thigh kicks end alot of his fights. His thigh kicks nearly stopped 370lb linebacker Bob Sapp but Hoost got cocky and tried to outbox Sapp. Thigh kick stopped Vovchanchyn, a heavy hitter. Thigh kick stopped Jan "The giant" Nortje (see why they call him the giant?)

Thigh kicks work best against bigger, stronger opponents that don't use much footwork. The only drawback is that you have to watch out for a counter right hand.

Sometimes when an opponent closes very rapidly, the thigh can be used like a round knee and driven into the ribs or stomach. It works well, variations being the quadricep muscle and the actual inside of the thigh. You can see the latter many times during the plumb, usually delivered to the area between the ribs and the top of the hip. This kick is very 'old-style', when the fighters stood in longer stances, and would try to catch a kick to throw the opponent. Not taught much nowadays, unless you are in a self-defense class as compared to a ring-fighters' class.
