Aside from the frustration of trying to learn how to kick properly in Muay Thai (I was in TKD for 4 years.... COMPLETELY different kicking style), I got a taste of what it feels like for bare shins to collide tonight. Not only shins, but someone's bony ass knee hitting my shin a few times.
That sh*t SUCKS! Time to toughen the shins. They're not used to it and are way too sensitive. What do you guys suggest I do to toughen them up? |

Just train man, there are no quick fixes. Kick the pads, kick the banana bag, over time this will toughen you. Try not to be kicking bone on bone for awhile.... all that does is bruise you and make it so that you are super tender and you need to heal.

wear shinpads when u do kicking drills with a partner. dont wear em when u do bagwork or padwork, do more of these bareshined and u it wil ltoughen ur leg. my first couple weeks, i would have to take days off training cause my legs would be too bruised some days.

Mate,
there' s nothing you can do that can toughen 'em up for kicking escept kicking. Heavy bag, pads, heavy bag, pads. Like someone posted earlier, shin pads for sparring, or if practicing tech. Don't listen to people who tell you to roll bottles down 'em, hit then with wood etc.....does it even sound like sense? Practice practice practice...and I dont you will ever get to the point where there's no pain no matter what. You just get to the point that only a full on blocked kick hurts them, and you should opnly be throwing them where the adrenaline will take care of the pain. Long term damage? Dunno, dont care. probably less than long distance runners joint damage, or all the little brain cells froma a comp boxer. My instructor (triple european champ and british champ in his day) still has good shins, its his knees that are no good (he must be mid 40's now, not fought in 10-15 year) and thats proablay as much genetics as damage |
