Default Does your instructor whack you with a baseball bat?

I have heard that some muay thai instrcuctors whack their students legs and backs with a baseball bat. Is this a common practice? Or are these schools just the exceptions to the rule? I think that could eventually cause you permanent damage, including arthritis. Thanks in advance.

I can't believe, nor have I heard of Muay Thai instructors hitting students with anything harder than a focus mitt.... Excepting thier own body parts, of course.

Although We are not a MT school we do use a MT hit stick. It is designed after a type described in an article by Master Toddy, It is made of wood and has cuts in it. Imagine a baseball cut in to 4ths with the cuts being about a centimeter wide. It absorbs quite a bit of the shock so that it delivers a decent blow but doesn't do the damage a baseball bat would do.

You do not hit joints with hard objects so arthritis is not a problem. If you wack hard enough you could get a bone bruise but that is more of your training partners doing not the hit stick.

It is mostly for forearms and shins.

Any school hitting their students with baseball bats needs to be shut down, they are romanticising what they think Muay Thai is all about and probably dont even do real muay thai. If the worlds toughest fighters, the Thai's (in Thailand), arent hitting eachother with baseball bats then why would a bunch of North American posers do it? Because they think it's cool and macho.

i think hitting people with a stick is just a way to toughen them up a bit. the whacks arent that hard, there just meant to sting and hurt a little so u get used to pain. in my friends kajukenbo class, they get hit with a stick sometimes, but alot of their drills are for the same perpouse. the take turns leg kicking eachother, and getting kicked in the stomach, and the do drills were the slap eachothers and hit eachothers forarm muscles. this is to toughen them up so it wont hurt as bad when they get hit in a real fight.

btw, i know some kids who go to a school called Reyes wing Chun and Muay thai here in san jose. tehy tell me how they smoke weed with their instructor before training n whatnot. they have fat sessions and smoke blunts and get high as hell before the other students show up. i thought thats so rediculous.

Why not just forget the training and take a baseball bat into the ring with you?

I would say this rumor is from the MTV documentary a few weeks ago. I'm not positive, but I think it was Master Toddy's school. He did smack the guys with a bat, but it was a wiffle ball bat. He wasn't in there smacking them with a Louisville Slugger or anything. He also wasn't swinging for the fences either, it was just a quick pop when he felt they lost focus or weren't performing to there potential.

If you haven't seen the documentary it's not bad. It's MTV so they spend more time on the personal lives of these guys than the training, but it is at least good that MT is getting some air time even if it is a little to watered down for the MTV audience.

By the way, I've never heard of the smoke a blunt self-defense program. I wonder what you need to get started, a lighter and a Bob Marley CD?

Theres a big difference between whacking someone with a stick and whacking someone with a baseball bat. My instructor tells us how his coach used to whack him with a bamboo stick whenever he dropped his guard. But he makes us to pushups and crunches as punishment instead.

I personally would have left if someone came at me with a ball bat. First lesson or not. I've had some rather nasty injuries over the years, and Ajarn Chai (unintentionally) broke a root of my tooth. But that was with a focus mitt, and he's never hit me with anything harder. ( not that he'd need too, hit can hit plenty hard with just that )

I've been hit with Escrima sticks, but not during a Muay Thai class. ;-)

So, I'd say no, in my experience, it's not common practice.

Well, if you had seen Master Chai's Advanced muay Thai video you would know the defense to being attacked with a baseball bat. Works quite well if you are Master Chai...lol. Personally, I usually just park my car tire on their foot.

I hate to change the subject, but where can I get the Master Chai's Advanced Muay Thai Video? I just bought Vut Kamnark's 4 VHS set and always looking for more.
