TKD and MT are different. The can combine well, for instance Master Toddy has said he has his fighters take several years of TKD before going into fighting.
however the concepts in the generation of force are different, the mechanics of the kicks are different. There are however a few TKD styles that do teach the MT kicks in with the TKD material. But it is generally not emphasised as much. I teach the MT style kicks and elbows as well as the traditional TKD kicks and elbows. And we even do clinch, but I can say my school has been the exception not the rule. It is very hard to get TKD people to want to train as MT people Train. Also kicking trees is silly, A banana tree is a plant more than it is a tree. So do not go out and start kicking oak, maple, elm trees and expect good results.

in ye olde thailand, fighters would kick banana trees in place of pads (which didnt really exist) because banana trees are soft. you see, any intelligent thai boxer realises that kicking things that are hard- poles, oak trees, glass bottles or whatever- is VERY BAD FOR YOUR LEGS. you should get plenty of conditioning through bagwork if you do enough training.
