Post Tae kwon do...Muay Thai, THe truth

Ovisously there must be some sort of simuality since yall keep putting them aganist each other. Muay thai is said ( according to most of the members) one of the best martial arts in the world. And tkd being ok but "uneffetive" while MT is.... So why in the hell are you putting them aganist eachj other?
MT is tyhe advanced form, to me, of TKD. I feel myself changing intoi a MT person. Blocking with my shins and everything. Alotppl do that ( evole like to MT) there are 2 routes you can baically go to from TKD. One is A harder tougher verison.. MT or you could turn your moves into crazy capieria like shit or just stay in TKD. But alotof ppl leave it. Like how Kickboxing was made from karate ppl who were tired of karate rules, Mt seems like was made for tkd ppl. TKD is like the younger form of MT. I feel like going outside and training my kicking a tre. I wish i had a tree to kick. One day i will be a gret Muay thai fighters..;. or at least kickboxing.

- I have a 1st Degree Blackbelt in TKD.

- I've spent about 2 weeks in a Muay Thai class.

They are absolutely NOTHING alike! I've had to learn how to kick all over again.... it's completely different in MT.

Put down the crackpipe and back away slowly.

Angry

then maybe you guys shuld stop comparing the too you idiot. Anyway your wrong. THe too are very much alike. And many tkd ppl go to Muay thai or kickboxing. nd thats a fact. TKD can be used as a beginner step. Manny ppl started usng the thigh as leverage to kick (steping on it and whatnot).
And to the 1st poster. My gamar is bad ehh? well guess what. STFU Thats all you have to say about my post. Well here is all i have to say. STFU. I have heard some ppl say TKD is a nice style that doesn't use kicks and shins ato block and is something you dont get hurt in and its a ....nice sporting competition friendly envirment. This is how a site disscribed it. Then i noticed, that kicks are not used as blocks! I have devolped that, and may ppl in my cass. It looks as if we were going to kick but we stop. This is not tuaght in our school. I see lot of video clips on the net of tkd sparring. Alot of them dont keep there hads up... dont punch aty all anymore they just use the hands to gain momentum. I have even seen some clips where when they got close instead of trying to push or punch at your oppent THyey did a sort of boxing garb expect it was more of just running into each other with there chest out and arms straight forward, showing that there not pushing the other guy. That is truly a disgrace. that is one way you can go by doing tkd.
The other is to start looking like a MT person. Some ppl even throw hooks at the chest protecter and when close uppercut the body. Even though they get no points for it. It still cuases the oppent daage, even though its a little. Ad thats the outlook of some ppl that turn them MT. The other is the pure ponit AND SPORT WAY. WHIch is gay. They just worry technacally on the points. Which is gay..

I would have to say that TKD and muay thai are complimentary to each other, but very different.

How Muay Thai & TKD are different:

One of the main differences is that it takes longer to be effective as a fighter doing TKD than muay thai. The difference is in training; muay thai guys spend more time getting used to contact at first with light, quick sparring drills then move on to heavier contact as they progress. They hit heavier pads and focus on developing power and emphasize complete conditioning.

MT techniques include boxing targeted at the head and body, kicks to the legs, body and head. Clinch control, knee kicks and elbow strikes (usually knees to the head and elbows aren't trained as much here for obvious reasons). All of these techniques are practiced in a spontaneous environment while sparring, meaning no one says when and where they are going to hit you. Techniques are taught and you learn how to put them together while the other guy is attacking you, you are busy attacking him.

Muay thai tends to attract athletic people, who are naturally comfortable in close quarters.

TKD guys need more ramp up time to learn how to kick body and head level, so thats less time spent using TKD for fight training. TKD focuses on developing speed/flexibility/accuracy first, then power which I think is a good idea as far as developing fundamentals is concerned. TKD emphasizes some conditioning, but it is pretty crude compared to that of Muay Thai.

TKD techniques are mostly kicks to the body and head. With occasional straight punching to the body. No head punching is allowed or kicks to the legs but TKD sparring is spontaneous. TKD schools teach self-defense that is different than tournament fighting, but it cannot be practiced in a dynamic/spontaneous environment and is taught as isolated techniques with compliant partners.

TKD tends to attract alot of different people for different reasons.

How they are compatable

Technically speaking, TKD targets are the mid to upper body. The emphasis on training is speed/flexibility/accuracy. Muay thai targets the entire body but does not have the high kicking variety which offers some suprise, but emphasizes power and conditioning. There are a few TKD kicks that are worth adding to the MT arsenal.

Adding TKD to Muay Thai would make you a better ring fighter, but not necessarily improve your self-defense. However adding Muay Thai to TKD would definitely add to your self defense and conditioning.

TKD style kickboxing is kind of similar to muay thai in that both fighters use boxing techniques. However, TKD style kickboxing follows the same kicking rules as TKD (no kicks to the legs, no clinch work). Whereas MT allows leg kicks and clinchwork. In Thailand, some of those guys go for sweeps and hip throws in the clinch on top of knees/elbows to the head

Just my 2 pesos.

PS - What's with the naked girl?

Hey guys.. I'm from sweden and train here. My club, which is pretty big, has a forum open for everyone.
I'm sad to say that I see here what I see in my forum.. negativity, unprovoked personal attacks and that many find what's wrong with a post instead of trying to understand what the spirit of the message is.
I don't know why people do this. Maybe they feel better when putting other people down. I think they need to ask themselves why they do it and if there really is need for it. The guy who started this thread had GOOD intentions, not bad. So what if he is young? So what if his spelling is not good? If you want to point any of that out (preferably for a relevant reason) do it with respect and in a humble way.
I thought that somewhere in the world, people could converse and even argue with respect for one another...

Now, I have question.
Tom Yum, you said:
"There are a few TKD kicks that are worth adding to the MT arsenal."
I was wondering what kicks you are reffering to.

I think the TKD side kick, spinning back kick and spinning wheel kick would be a good addition for the ring.

An example, if you have a strong rear thigh kick and use it frequently, your opponent will either figure out the timing and close with a right cross, skip into a cut kick and punish your planted leg or your ribs or move back just out of the kicks path and come in with their hands (easiest response).

Whenever they move back, instead of spinning through your missed thigh kick, you can recover from about 3/4 of a spin, chamber your rear leg and turn it into a side kick to the body. That side kick lands alot and can turn around your sparring match, letting you stay on the offensive.

Have you used any non-muay thai kicks before while sparring or in the ring and with what success?

First a little about my history since I don't post on here very often. I'm 25 taken TKD for about 10 years however stopped a few years ago. Currently I'm training under Cheetah in Emeryville. I've been a national champion in TKD when I was 14 and been to countless tournaments throughout my carreer as a TKD practicioner.

Personally, there are only a few things I bring with me from TKD while I train in MT. One of course is, technique. Turning your feet while you kick, or pivoting on the ball of you foot to kick and twisting/turning your hips to gain power. Second is speed. In TKD, it's about being fast and accurate, and I try to bring that with me when I train in MT. Third is power. Although TKD in general doesn't have as much power as a MT fighter, I still bring what I've learned, and am developing it further.

I thnk Tom Yum explained it pretty well the differences and similarities of the two, so I won't repeat it.

Oh to the original poster, TKDkickboxer, sorry to cap on you, but seriously, I can't understand half of what you're trying to say. For example:

You said,

then maybe you guys shuld stop comparing the too you idiot. Anyway your wrong. THe too are very much alike.

but you go and compare the two and what you say seems like they are not alike. Basically contradicting what you said. I think you know what YOU are saying, but maybe you have a hard time writing it down. Not sure, just an observation.

And to the 1st poster. My gamar is bad ehh?
sorry that one just made my laugh.

look alot of tkd ppl move to MT becuz the want to advance, TKD is kinda like basic MT. But you ahould'nt make MT ppl fight Tkd ppl thats stupid. Thats olike putting boxing up aganist it.. nop chance. I mean bopxing dosen't even use feet...we not even gunna talk about elbows and shit. A MT would kill a boxer.. just cuase of the range ofmoves.. Boxing is fun but what most ppl fdont relize isd its more of sportish, on the street it is ... kinda ok but aanist other ma and or even wrestlers they just get beat. Try that fancy ( YES FANCY JUST LIKE SAY SAY TKD IS FANCY) bob and weave aganist MT or even tkd... Knees to the head... kicks all over jaws and shit. But i like the bob and weave i have used i aganist the wild "swing entire arm over" kind of school/street hit. Its easly doged by that...and its fun to doodge them with bob and weave.. lol. But In my tkd school we have practiced knees and head hita... moves that are not used in sparring..which can be frustaing. Which is why many ppl convert. They tell us "oh this is for the street" but its not like am gunna go practice on street ppl. I al;ways planned too though. Use a a jab jab crodsss jab, or some other combo.. they cant handle it.. and there punchs so slow.. they bring there are all the way back, and sometimes swing ithere unches around.. which can be annoying to get hit by.. it dosen't hurt but... they so wild you cant get your form right. And when they get it fast... dude its crazy. But its like you see those lights and hear some shit but you can stand up... and your head dont turn.. Well its weird. Oh wait am off subject. What the hell was the point? Tkd is not very like MT but its like a base.. and a sytarting point. UNderstandable? And yes i was gunna kick oak trees... Will my feet get deformed? i dont understand? Where the **** do i find a bana tree. And why will my feet get deformed if i have protection.
plz help.

oh yea and some of you say mt and tkd are othing alike. TKD has cetain simulaities of MT that make you, if aggressive enuf conform into a MT simular fighter. Like doing things that are not taught by tkd schools. Blocking with kicks.. shins etc. Knees heavy hooks.. crosses to body.. accidently knoking out your oppent at a tournament and having him removed in an emeracy vichle. ( happeed at the last tourmnt i went too, some guy punched so,me guy in the forehead and droped him... see how proper punching works? many of the ppl i use to be in 8th grade with thought they could box.. when i showed one guy the rpeer jab he looked confused. They all ways round te punches and .. well whatever this little dude weuighing 80-90 pounds though he could take me, am 184 well some ppl probally prepused him into it. Iam glad i didn;'t fight em' i think i could have done serious damage, not too him of couse .. **** him but a 184 5'9 person fighting a 90 pound 4'9 person screams out lawsuit. What am i gunna say? Right. I sidn't relize tht back then. We cool now. He didn't show up at my party out of the 5 something ppl that were there ( bout 56 in ou r class) i have not seen him. Anyway MT and TKDare alike if they wee not they wuld not be put toigether so much.
adding MT to tkd is good and helps it. but add Tkd to mt is like adding a pentuiem 2 processor to a pentuime 4 posser computer.. you get me? guess some spinning kicks could be added in the MT ring but I suggest that be better added to kickboxing.
