hi everybody ~ i've been doing some fairly heavy conditioning of my shins for about 18 months and as of late, i've noticed that my feet feel like they are on fire! not always at the same time, sometimes just one feels super HOT for no reason. i also have a shooting spasm above my left ankle / lower shin area almost all the time over the last 4 weeks. HOWEVER, nothing really 'hurts', so i'm more curious than worried. is this a normal part of deadening the nerves via shin conditioning? anyone else experience weird nerve sensations from heavy bagwork, 'cause i'd like to know if these sensations are normal or if i should go to the doctor. any feedback greatly appreciated. thanks betty

hey Betty, I have been doing muay Thai for a long time, over 20 years, and never experienced anything like what you describe, even after shin-to-shin contact. Maybe a visit to the doctor is advisable.

in excruciating and specific detail, Betty
Speaking solely for myself, I am too cheap to ever see a doctor (and a big chicken to boot)

okaaay u guys, here's my update. saw doc today. xrays & mri. i have a crushed peroneal nerve in my left ankle. Apparently this nerve goes down the meaty part of the shin and winds below the outside knobby part of the ankle and then goes into the foot. this is whats causing the strange sensations in my shin and foot. so, i figured, no problem. sounds fairly minor. there's lots of nerves in the body, what's one less? until i was told it needs either injections into the ankle to break up the scar tissue that's impinging the nerve, or corrective surgery.
given referral to orthopedic surgeon. lame BUT i was NOT told that i have to cut back on kickboxing, as the doctor said the more stretching and flexing i do to that area, the less likely it will worsen. sooo that's my deal.

Very good and informative post, Betty. I wonder if people who persist in kicking heads with their feet ever get this kind of injury. Or maybe muay Thai practitioners who hit an elbow with their instep. Any other experiences like this from people out there? Does anyone know if a similar injury could occur to the arm from repeated backfists? My curiosity stems from my idiocy

I have hit my instep on elbows before, but instead of a "hot spot", I just got big scar tissue build ups. So far atleast. I have experienced a nerve type pain in my heal before. I dunno what it was from, but afer a couple weeks and some stretching, it went away.
