I was wondering, how big are muay thai camps in Thailand?
That is, how many students are there total and how many trainers?
I'd like to know about the biggest (or one of the biggest), and also how big the "average" camp is... just to get a feel for it.

In Chiang Mai, Pedro's place (ancientmuaythai.com) is limited to five people per class. Lanna probably is the largest but many are people there for only a few weeks; maybe 20 -30 at any given time. Chai Yai and Siam #1 are somewhere in between the two I mentioned.

I see. I was just asking for comparison. My club (kickboxing) claims to have 700 members of which 500 of those are active. As you can imagine, most of them are not "serious" about it.. they do it as a fun workout.
I guess pretty much all of the guys that train in the thai camps are dead serious

You can go to the Banglampoo area of Bangkok and find 'tourist' schools which offer classes from 1 day to 1 week, some of which will even get you a fight! Costs can be prohibitive, as much as $100 for a week. Some schools are invitation only, such as Fairtex or Carryboy. Other schools, often surprisingly good, can be found by just walking around with your ears open to the sound of people kicking pads. Out in the suburbs are many good schools, such as the Singha Beer-sponsored camp, which had, at the time I visited, 7 students and 4 teachers. I believe Brian Popejoy trained there for awhile when he was staying in Changwattana. In 1991 the Rainbow Camp had 4 champs out of 7 students, so the size of the place seems to have nothing to do with the quality of the product. If you are curious and open you can find exactly what you are wanting or needing.
