Hey, man.
You're doing good. I would do a few months of general conditioning along with working the bag. As a matter of fact, this is how I went about doing it a couple of years ago. My situation was simmillar. I was 24, horribly out of shape, a smoker, and also making some other bad choices. I was on the skinny side though. But I knew I always wanted to live a clean, athletic lifestyle. (Last time I had done something athletic was lifting some weights in college and being on the swim team in high school). So, I got fed up with my lifestyle and decided to change it. I cut out all the shit completely and started getting in shape by first walking and, then, running along with some push-ups and shadow boxing. It took me about six months to get in somewhat decent shape, and, then, I joined Krav Maga. Let me tell you, I still had some embarasing moments but was getting fitter and better. I also learned a lot about various fitness protocols and martial arts. Taking a break from Krav now and looking for a MT/BJJ place and still working on my fitness. So, keep up the good work, train hard, join the Martial Arts and enjoy life! P.S. Check out www.Crossfit.com. Download the free issue of "What is Fitness?" at the lower left corner, read the posts, and try some of the Workouts of the Day. This stuff will make fit like nothing else! |

I would recommend that you join ASAP. Because you may tend to develop bad habits by training on your own (hitting the bag, etc. etc.).
Believe me, it's harder to break bad habits once they're settled than to prevent em from happening. I was out of training for a long time, then restarted - before restarting training, i trained on my own and developed a bad habit of bouncing, (its a lot better now but still, it took quite some time to rid of it). Who cares if yer not in the best shape, once you start training, your workouts may be more personalized, etc. etc. (ask the instructor what kinda workouts to do / when... they give great advice) Good luck man! |

I couldn't agree with LiQuiD_PaRaDoX more.
When you join they will ask you if you had previous MA experience. If you say no, they will probably be happy as they wont have any bad habits to break. They will know that you're out of shape, and rarely do instructors expect newcomers to be able to do everything required of that MA. Otherwise you wouldn't be enrolling, right? Join in, I cant think of a way to get in shape quicker. You'll get stronger while learning proper technique. Have fun. |
