i dont really like training with women. they are either too weak to go hard enough on them to even get anything out of the training, or they try to go all out and act tough to show the guys they can hang but then get butt hurt when u give them a decent pop. some chicks are really hot and i cant really concenrate on anything else when they are around and just blatanlty check the out instead. so yeah, chicks really just hinder my training.

Hey man, I agree with you -not intirely- I don't like training with women either (and I'm a woman) but maybe if you focus less on the 'hot chick' and more on the fighter, you may find a girlie that would give you a run for ya money
By the way, where do you train? |

Ah well, testosterone is hard to compete with. I train with Saekson Janjira in Tx,and I've been training Muay Thai for a while. I realize that alot of guys have the same views that you have --being on the receiving side and all-- but most guys (excluding my instructors, *nuff respect*) just don't take women seriously when it comes to martial arts.
So what do you think about female fights? Do you think they are just to whimpy, or did you see any that were aggressive enough to keep your attention for a few mins.? |

I think you are confusing sex with size. Obviously if you are in a wrestling class at 140 lbs and going against a senior who is 240 you will lose. If you are in a muay Thai plumb class you might get your clock cleaned by a 100 lb woman, even if you weigh 240. If you have been training jujutsu for 20 years and muay Thai for 15 and go to Thailand to learn Krabi-Krabong you might find out your 13-yr old teacher can carve you up any time she wants. If you want to go onto a soccer field against Mia Hamm or Tiffany Milbrett you will lose. Try kickboxing with Kathy Long or Lucija Ryker (sorry about the misspelling). The variables are too many to make a blanket statement about women versus men.

I dunno if I have a view on female martial artists in general. I don't like hasty conclusions, but I can speak to the girls that I've trained with over the years. There have been fewer, and they run the gambit, just like guys. Some are pretty tough, some arn't. Some have drive to learn, and some have no drive at all. Overall, I'd say that fewer women have had "the eye of the tiger", but as the sample set is so much smaller than the guys I've trained with, it's hard to say. Some of the best form I've seen has come from girls, but still....I don't think they're hitting as hard as I do, and I'm not a big guy.
I don't have any problems with training with women except the double standard that always gets applied. I think if you are in a system with rankings, the tests for those rankings should be equally difficult for man or woman. I would expect a woman testing for black belt in our kenpo society to execute the same kicks, throws, take-downs, ect that a guy would. I'm not saying that they have to be as strong, just as skilled.

It seems also that women who stick with it tend to be dirtier fighters than men (WARNING: BIG GENERALITIES COMING UP). For instance, female fighters tend not to be very careful about low blows. Also, in light sparring situations between males and females, the females tend to amp up their speed/power - then complain when the man starts hitting harder back. Finally, have you ever watched a female boxing match? Man those chicks don't mess around - they come out of their corners and just start throwing down right away. I don't know why it's like that. Possibly because, as I suggested earlier, the only women who stay with it very long are the 'fighter' types whereas the men are from a broader spectrum. It could also be that the women are almost always training with bigger, stronger partners (men) and therefore are forced to adapt a more aggressive strategy in order to compensate. Or, it could be that it's just the women at my gym and I'm over generalizing.

You have a point there gregimotis. Women do have an advantage in training because of the fact that the ratio of men participating in martial arts compared to women is greater, and women usually have to end up sparring with men anyway.
I can tell you from what I have experienced, sparring with men has helped me because I tend to be more agressive than I would be with a woman, so my attack is harder and faster. Admist all of that, the fact I find most helpful, is that a man would attack me harder and faster than most women, so that really helps me with my defense. But who really cares right? Real female MARTIAL ARTISTS are cool, but women who just "take martial arts" I don't like to train with cuz they are too weak.
Actually, female martial artists are often the coolest I think cuz they are tough, but it's like they usually just want to train, not prove something. Everytime I spar some male, 50% of them (notice I said 50%, the other 50% are very respectable), it is like they must prove something, usually if there are onlookers especially. God forbid if a guy has his girlfriend watching, or if he has his girl watching and likes to be a showoff, I almost got the crap kicked out of me sparring such a guy who was more advanced than me. But then he stopped training for awhile and then he came back, thinking he was still bad-ass, luckily I had improved, so I let him have it Well okay not really, I am not that type, but my skill actually had surpassed his, which was cool, and I basically just let him know that. Then there are guys who are totally fine too, but they seem rarer. Usually if they are really serious about martial arts, and aren't the show-off type, they are cool. Females though, the non-serious ones just in it for fun are simply too weak I think; the serious ones are cool though, and usually they are disciplined and will fight good, but it's not like they're trying to knock your head off just to be tough; I mean if you are fighting to knock the opponent's head off, they are usually very competitive and will try hard to do so (female professional fighters are frickin' aggressive I've noticed), but I mean if you decide to spar just for the sake of sparring, and not fighting to knock the other person's head off, they will spar respectably. At least in my experience anyhow. |
