Which would you choose? Here are the options:
A) The Wat: Instructor: Kru Phil Nurse, European and British Welterweight Champion. Record 32-3-0. Beautiful facilities, unlimited Muay Thai, western boxing, and Jai Yet Yoga (stretching yoga, which I probably won't do if it seems girly). Cost $150 a month. Has indoor boxing ring, heavy bags, all typical muay thai training equipment. B) Five Points Fitness. Instructor: Kru Steve Milles. Kru of the International Muay Thai Association under Master Toddy. HUGE facilities (2 floors). Unlimited Muay Thai, Kali (which I heard includes fighting with a bladed weapon, and grappling?!), and full weight lifting facilities. Has indoor ring, heavy bags, the works. Costs $165/month. I guess my main concern is which makes a better combination: Muay Thai+Western Boxing or Muay Thai+Kali. Anyone here practice Kali? Does it help in your ground game at all? I know BJJ would be the best for developing a strong ground game but right now it's out of the picture for me because BJJ in NYC is WAAAY too expensive and the lesser known schools that are affordable just don't seem worth it (i.e. $150 for twice a week, 1 hour classes comprised of 30 mins of warmup exercies). So, the question is...which would you choose, option A or B? |

I went with 5point.
The wat is much smaller, has hardwood floors (ouch), fewer bags, and no super-heavy bags (5point has some that are built around poles -- you can kick them as hard as you want). On the other hand, the wat has dedicated Western boxing classes (and sparring, I think). My impression was that Phil at the wat focuses more on conditioning, while Steve/Simon at 5point focus on timing/technique. Both gyms have lots of people fighting out of them. Can't really go wrong with either. |

If you are willing to drive over to Jersey, you may find some better bargains and outstanding instuctors, dojos/dojangs/gyms.
