Loiseau trains out of Tristar in Montreal. Muay Thai is a regular part of his training routine.

There is a time and a place for certain techniques. That was the right time, and the right place. To say the KO was a result of an ill-trained recipient is mistaken IMO.

First the clip is a snapshot of the fight, and people are discussing it as an isolated event. What should be noted is that despite academian's claims of ineptude on the fighters' part, Loiseau is a seasoned veteran, and a potential candidate for the UFC 185pd title in the future. The kick was setup beautifully. Notice it is Loiseau that initiates the the kick, and McCarthy responds. Loiseau had thrown several long right hands previous to this, and McCarthy was trying to beat him to the punch in this instance. He saw Loiseau start to throw, and came in. Except this time Loiseau wasn't throwing the right, it was a spinning back kick. Right place, right time. A veteran's kick.

That being said, would I recommend people going out and trying to win a fight with a spinning back kick... probably not. They are easy to defend, but then again, many techniques are if you know they're coming.

That kick just made Loiseau a little bit richer, and I would ask him if it was a blunderous technique. Some statements sound good on paper (or in type), but ask Loiseau if he'd take that kick back.

Mullins: That was UFC 53
