I am gonna buy a thai bag really soon, but i can't decide what to get a leather or a synthetic leather thai bag. the synthetic is half the price so i was thinking of that. But i just wanted some opinions on them. what should i get sythetic or leather?

from what I hear on the forums leather is the best. They say it's worth the extra money. I assume they are right.

leather is better. it should last a lot longer, it really shouldnt split for a start. a word of caution tho, be careful hitting a synthetic bag... friction burns can be deeply horrible. you take the skin off your knuckles and every time you hit something they hurt and bleed again. wear gloves

that said... id recommend the synthetic bag. a fairly heavy one or one that fixes to the floor cos the swinging about can be annoying. synthetic bags last for quite a while unless your really beating the crap out of them (obv no knives to be used on your punch bag)

I have used both, either is good. If it is home use, just go with the synthetic

- there is a reason the bags arn't chained to the floor...if you don't know it...why are you on a martial arts site and secondly why are you giving advice?

And I would invest a good sparring partner and some extra gear rather then spend your money on a bag full of sand to hit. But thats just me.

Partner training is not a replacement for heavybag training, just as heavybag training is not a replacement for partner training.

Heavybag training is the biggest waste of time in the martial arts. My opinion only of course.

What do you base that on? Do you train Muay Thai? What gym? Have you fought? What do you do in place of bag training?

Yes I've learned muay thai, my brother in law Ghan is from Thailand and he taught me what he knows. It's a bad ass art. I have the upmost respect for muy thai fighters. But once you learn to use your hips when you kick and snap it you really arn't going to increase your hit damage as much by kicking a big bag full of sand as you would learning to place your kick toward the thigh nerve or side of the knee cap surgically everytime. You don't have to kick someone in the leg very hard to buckle it a bull through them. Hands and elbows are faster than legs, and I belive a well placed elbow in any muy thai style fight progress more toward victory because they cause cuts more than any other type of strike besides headbutts. I think accuarcy and training with something that hits back is more important than learning to be balistic against an oppent like a bag. Try being balistic against a guy who's trying to dodge and stall his way to a win in late rounds.

But if you really want a heavy bag, go leather. Because if your truly passionate about martial arts your going to be using that heavy bag for probably 10 -15 years. My bag was made for me by a friends dad. It's leather and you can't beat that smell when your beating the crap out of it.

PS. I use my heavy bag for throws mostly but I've drawn small round targets on it I hit while it swings to make it a better training tool when I strike train.
