The quality in equipment varies.... Some of the top manufacturers are:

Boxing, and some MuayThai/Kickboxing:
Cleto-Reyes
Grant
Ringside
Title
Everlast

MuayThai
Twins
ThaiSmai
Windy
Fairtex

You gotta kinda pick and choose which items to get from each manufacturer. For instance, ThaiSmai & Twins have the best shorts. Twins & Windy have the best Thai Pads. Twins & Fairtex have the best gloves (Twins is, overall, good quality stuff!)

For Boxing only, Cleto-Reyes has the best gloves and headgear, followed by Grant. Title, Ringside, and Everlast vary widely because they sell such a wide variety of equipment. Some of their equipment lines are amongst the best available, and some are total poo-poo. (LOL)

I have to further support that the Cleto Reyes fight gloves are AWESOME. They feel GREAT and feel even better when you hit someone with em. They're top-quality build and they use those gloves in K-1 competitions.

Twins are good too, a little more flexible to help with clinching + grabbing. I find that the Twins gloves are a little bigger in size than the Cleto Reyes gloves... but they're BOTH great quality gloves.

Hey Khun Kao, do you have any recommendations for a good bellypad?

In my experience, Twins & Fairtex have the best belly pads.

However, both Ringside & Title sell thick, full chest protectors that are AWESOME! They are better for certain drills than a belly pad because they don't restrict the movement of your hips, but the sacrifice is they restrict the movement of your shoulders and torso.

Thanks for the advice Khun Kao! Greatly appreciated!

Ohh one more thing... do you know much about the groin/lower ab protectors i.e. the one that's shown in the middle here

http://www.thaiboxinggear.com/main.p...Cat&cat_id=76#

Are they better alternatives to using the annoying 3-string steel cups? LOL.

Never used one, but it looks like it would seriously restrict your kicking and kneeing motions, as well as restrict your knee blocking. I'd only be willing to use something like that if I was just Boxing.

Could someone help me out here? When would you use a belly pad? Id never heard of them before this thread, and im sure i havent seen any at my gym. Gloves and shin guards are obviously useful, but just how beneficial can belly pads be?
Just asking. Cheers

Belly pads are meant to be used in combination with Thai Pads.

With the Thai pads on your arms, and the Belly Pad (padded belt) around your waist, a pad holder provides an incredibly realistic training partner. It gives you a hell of a lot more options in your drills, allowing for more realistic training as you can push kick, round kick, and knee to the belly pad.

The belly pad doesn't absorb all of the blow, but a skilled padman knows how to move his body and use the Thai pads in conjunction with the belly pad so that the trainee is essentially able to train full speed, full power against a realistic target with minimal risk of injury.

One of my personal favorite combinations as padman is to wear headgear, focus mitt on lead hand, Thai pad on rear hand, belly pad, and shinguards. This allows me to move and defend like a real opponent, while giving me options of my own for attacking back. In some ways, this is even better than sparring because it allows the trainee to go full power & speed with ALL of his techniques. Usually when sparring in MuayThai, you only spar full power/speed when you're boxing only. Any other sparring needs to be toned down to varying degrees to prevent injury.
