Hi, I'm wondering if muay thai has any affect in a street fight. Does the clinch or leg kicks work in real life or it only work in rings??thx

Yes. I'm assuming you're relatively new to the martial arts?
Thai kicks to the leg make walking difficult. All it takes are one maybe two to the right place and you're on the ground. To the head = concussion. The clinch is a technique used to control another's head (and there body) so that you can blast knees and elbows into different targets. Not very fun on the receiving end. I've never been elbowed, but have been kneed to the body and have knocked others down and out with knees to the body. I'd never wish a full knee to the body to my worst enemy. Elbows open cuts and also cause concussions. |

Yes, but the techniques are modified for a street encounter. for example instead of the side of the leg, in a street fight im looking for the side of their knee. Instead of a hook to the jaw, i might aim for there temple, etc. Of course this would also go for knees and elbows.

real fight...just aim that straight knee down a bit.
thai clinche works...but you could also easily find yourself in a grappling situation depending on what the other person may or may not know. IF you have a good clinche game, then you could easily dominate that range...the problems are with getting INTO that range and maintaining that position. i.e. the clinche may be hard to get if the person is swinging wildly, and hard to maintain if the person is a grappler...and in fact may put you into a really shitty position, really quickly. dig? |

and as for the strikes to the temple comment...the temple isn't softer than the surrounding parts of the skull...there is a whole bunch of B.S. urban mythology about that type of shit. Aim the elbows, as always, toward the jaw, bridge of the nose, or be a bastard and aim for the boney bits around the eye. Crush the orbit there. Just my opinion.
Thai kicks toward the crook of the knee...great idea. Also, teaps to the knees...but follow through with your weight. Kneeing on the inside of the thighs, and to the groin area, floating ribs or liver (which is on your left) with curve knees...kidneys if they turn their back...and finally the face if you can get it. Also..headbutts work in the clinche, so do uppercuts if you want to gain space. follow with stomps. |

Fall back? no, man, do something...here's a little something they teach you when you play football, if somebody rushes in to tackel you, their body weight is so far forward that a good shove down and to the side puts them on their ass. If the guy's swinging, and running...like a jackass...just weather the storm, keep your hands up, and hit him harder. If they grab you, clinche and smash. |

If you work a heav bag and sparr, you should be able to knock the crap out of the guy barring that he's not 100 lbs heavier and significantly stronger, but sometimes a good shot on the chin will make anyone fall. its the ribs, jaw area u should aim for. elbows are good as you don't risk breaking bones in ur hands.
i personally dont find the temple, or groin area any weaker. uve pretty much gotta knee him from under his balls to have an effect. and if ur that close the other guy is prob gonna try hit u back. |

if you're in the clinche and the guy isn't a thai boxer or a grappler...it's OKAY to be in close. In fact...it's sort of the idea....isn't it?
and if the guy tries to hit you back...? You're in a fucking fight. That's what happens, both people get hit...if not, it's not really a fight, huh?! Balls are a great target...the temple thing is b.s. elbows are good...but, hommie, you're contradicting yourself. You have to be very very close for elbows to come into play too...otherwise you'll stike out and give the person a really big in. Trust me. |
