hey,
I'm new to MT, just shy of my third month of training, and have a few concerns involving my punching technique, specifically being my uppercut. I've been watching a few instructors, and have seen them performing the uppercut with 1) their thumb towards their face and 2) their palm towards their face and was wondering which was proper form? Also, my punching is rather weak in my opinion and was wondering if there are any exercises I could do at home to improve the power behind my punching. |

The angle of the fist is usually dependant on the target. Most people throw uppercuts with their palm towards their face.
But I've also learned uppercuts with the thumb towards the face. However, the punch is called an "up hook" because despite the upwards angle, the body mechanics more closely resemble the hook. Its hard to say why your punching is weak without seeing you punch. If you want stronger punches in general, pushups, pullups, and dips are the way to go. They build your arms and shoulders very well. You can also try punching with LIGHT dumbbells. I don't recommend punching with weights greater than 1 - 2 lbs (slightly heavier than your standard large boxing glove) However, chances are that you have a problem with your mechanics. It could be your body alignment, or it could be your distancing. Ask your coach to work with you on your boxing and see what he has to say. |

Well I know I am really new at this, so correct me if I am wrong, but I was told that most of the power of punches is generated by the rotation of the hips, torso, and shoulders and extending that power out through the arms. So maybe your trying to be all arms instead of moving your body as a whole.
I dunno, I was just throwing the idea out there. |

Anyway, like I said, ask you coach to double-check your mechanics.... |
