hey guys
just wanted to ask, do any of you train at a gym that has a "traditional" atmosphere? by this i mean are there expectations regarding behaviour and how you train? for example, no talking during rounds, showing respect to the trainers, maybe having to change pads quickly between rounds otherwise you get pushups. things like that. i've heard that it varies with muay thai, especially if you have a non-thai teacher thanks |

"Tradition" varies from gym-to-gym, even if you have a Thai coach. I've trained with 3 different Thai coaches, and they each have different expectations. I also trained with a kid from Thailand who had what you would probably consider a very "traditional" approach, even wai-ing (bowing) to the heavy bag before and after the round...
In my experience, Thai coaches simply want you to respect them. If you make effort to do so and follow their rules, they have a very practical approach to training after that....

You could always just bow all over the place no matter where you are. We bow a lot...in fact I accidently bowed to my dinner couple weeks ago. Not a bad habbit to get into.

Traditional? Well, when I first started with Master Chai I threw up twice a day for the first 11 seminars, or 22 days...lol But in general we 'wai'd at the beginning of every drill, partner to partner. At the Buddhai Swan we meditated every day from 8 to 9:30 in the morning and religion was so intertwined with everything we did I even now cannot isolate the spiritual and mental from the physical. At the Pacific Northwest Muay Thai Camp there has been a constant thread of Discipline for 15 years, so I guess that is a tradition of some kind. But it really comes down to you and how you approach your training, as an art or as a toolkit?
