Helo. I have trined muay thai for some years and are quit small. I got a problem with defending from jabs. If a person are longer ther reach is longer and I always ge smashed in the head by a jab. If I am trying to get in on the guy or somthing.
I was hoping for you to help me get som idees to defend myself against it. Every tip is usefull^^ Thanks in advance. WhiteTiger |

Nothing magic to it, just learn to slip.
Another option would be to feint that you are stepping in to initiate your opponents jab, then step in as he pulls his jab back and follow him into his body. Of course, thats easier said than done. I've been boxing and Thai-boxing for almost 15 years and still can't do that very well.... B |

if you are gonna eat the jab, pay him back like Khun Kao said follow his jab back with a straight right, or throw a leg kick. try and give him different angles and don't move straight in if you can help it. just my 2 cents

you need to do parrying and counter attack drills from boxing. another thing to pay attention to is your form. str8 muay thai guys usually dont extend their punches to maximum reach the way western boxing does. making sure to fully extend your punches to their maximum reach can add a few inches to your reach and help your countering skill keep your lead hand in front of your body in line with your lead leg, with your powerhand tucked against your chin and body a bit behind the lead. then when people jab at you, block/parry their jab with your powerhand and use your lead hand to counter attack. other ways to counter jabs are with kicks. let him come in for a jab and step outwards to either direction, left or right, and deliver a kick to his legs. or counter the jab with a push kick to the solar plexus. learning to parry and counter is a must. ask people around the gym to teach you how. this is especially important when fighting taller people. staying on the outside with a taller person is like fighting an uphill battle. you need to parry their strikes and get to their body asap otherwise they will pick u apart with reach. |

Keep your hands up and make sure you are going to the outside.

Hello white tiger ,you already got good information ,keep it ,practise , and learn well. In short terms ,if you are the shorter guy make mobility your first resource . Learn well the tecniques . Every time someone puts a jab on you , donīt wait for another punch . and learn how to jab well too. You can be resourceful too .Keep up the good spirit. Are you shure that you understood ? if not , itīs up to you.

Everybody is taking for granted that this kid knows what a slip is. Just in case he doesn't, a Slip is when you move your head to the side and let the straight punch go past you. It is not a duck, it is difficult and takes impeccable timing.
Another option is to make a two handed block where you catch the jab in your reinforced hands and take a step back at the same time. Double end bags and speed bags are good training apparatus to help with slips and parries.

As hardball said before , maybe everybody is taking for granted the information, even Whiteguy . When a short guy ducks ,sometimes it works . But for me , it makes the job easier. So ,tiger, youīve got plenty of homework ,unless you want to to learn the hardway.
