I spent some time in Thailand, many years ago. At the time, I had no interest in studying MT, but I did watch matches from time to time.
I really don't recall this kind of shin break being common, especially when one considers how often they have boxing matches over there. There is no doubt in my mind that if this sort of thing happened on a more regular basis, folks would have been talking about "so and so" breaking a leg in a match. Therefore, I'm not certain if this kind of shin break is just one gawdawful accident, or if the guy didn't condition his shin enough to take this kind of punishment. For what it's worth, both of the leg break incidents I saw did not involve fighters from Thailand. |

Question:
Every so often you hear about someone breaking thier opponent's leg (usually not as bad as that clip but anyway), does it ever happen that the person kicking breaks their own leg? I mean, it's the same amount of force, does that happen? Just curious. |

I've never heard of this happening. Having said that, it's a matter of applying force using a something hard, i.e., your shin, against something less hard--some other part of the other person's leg, usually the side of the knee.
In the leg break video above, the person kicking ended up smacking his shin against something harder, and that's why his leg broke. |

I was told about a guy fighting in hawaii once where a guy managed to kick the top of his femer sp? (biggest bone in your body) in half & he screamed like hell on the floor.
edit: that video is identical to what happened to me only i connected with his hip. |

Hey retired, good to hear from you. Best wishes!
Here's a link to his thread (which caused me to join this forum after I broke my ankle). Broken Leg

Somone on youtube commented that this is what happens when you take too much steroids? Does anyone know if this is true? You can definately break your leg kicking somone else if they check correctly. In Thailand, if the opponent knows the other guy is a good checker, he will usually not throw kicks for fear of breaking his own leg.
