I thought I'd heard that Tony Jaa was a fighter at one point, but the thing to realise about any of his demonstrations is that they're based on his fame as an actor. He may be a really good martial artist, I wouldn't know, but what he demonstrates now is gymnastic MA for film, which is COMPLEATLY different than practical MA.

I heard, from a source I consider to be fairly reliable, that Tony Ja got his start as a stuntman for Jackie Chan. I also heard that Ong Bak I is now over 8 years old, and that it was not very popular in Thailand when it originally came out, but do not know that for a fact. It does make sense, though. And that demo shown here is at least 3 years old. That said, he does rock! And he has superb reflexes and athletic skill so, he could probably surprise a lot of people if he had to.

you know, i bet tony jaa could in fact use those flashy gymnastic stkills of his for self defense if he wanted to. not for fighting, but for evasion. he can move alot like those le parkour guys, and he would probobly be able to escape a sticky situation faster than other people. jumping fences, should be no problem for these kind of people.

Great acrobatic skills. I especially enjoyed the guy chasing the kick with the board so Tony wouldn’t miss it.

That would be a clever observation, except you completely missed what he was doing . This demo is just a live version of the stunts he performed in his movies. Where the guy w/ the board chases him, there was a scene in the movie where *bet you can already guess* a guy was chasing tony and tony does the same backflip and kicks the guy in the head (here represented by the board). That huge backflip to knock the focus pad out of the hand of the guy on top of the pyramid = a backflip in his second film where he breaks a street light. This is simply how he promotes his films, but pretty much everything he does in his demos comes straight from his films.

It pretty cool how consistent tony can be with his acrobatics. I think there is a good mixture of actual thai styles and the visually impressive acrobatics. tony's always said he wanted to mix bruce lee w/ jackie chan. If you haven't seen tony's second film - tom yum goong - there's a great scene where he just does a series of various bone breaks on like 50 guys (realistic - watch a documentary if you want pretend realism - you watch an action movie for great action - in it's many forms).

Thanks for the clarification.

Honestly it is amazing that folks can even do this stuff. It is fun to watch. It is also fun to poke fun of.

It is sheer awesomeness as long as you can take it for the entertainment it's supposed to be.

I heard in the Chinese media that Tony Jaa learned Muay Thai only 7 years prior to the movie. Before that, he was a stuntman who doubled in action movies. He's always been in the entertainment business, so he was never a fighter.

His jumping spin kicks are a little too fancy to be Muay Thai in my opinion. Those are more like Taekwondo.

Tony Jaa has experience in a number of sports, including muay thai, tkd, gymnastics, and obviously gained some exposure to old muay styles...
probably could be a bomb free-runner too.

(As far as actors go) Still I think Takeshi Kitano could beat him. (boom boom)
