Default please give a newbie some advice

hi.

I have been doing jujitsu for about three years (i am a blue belt) and i am thinking about trying a new art becuase

i am about 6 feet and 7 inches and i am very muscular. i weigh about 250

I feel due to my body size, doing a jujitsu system which involves hip throws is not the ideal art for me to practice. (if u have no idea what a hip throw is, it involves you getting below you partners waist)

by the way, they average hieght in my jujitsu class is about 5 ft 6 inches and weight is about 170. so its really not fun learning with people u can kick in the face by kicking at your knee level

I know nothing about muay thai and i am trying to learn. but based on what i have said about myself, would i fit in good with muay thai?

6'7" Huh? Remind me to call you next time I can't reach the top shelf. Seriously though I see no reason you why couldn't do MT if you wanted. Your hight would give you a great reach advantage and some killer knees. Look at the "best thai boxer ever" thread while you're here. It has some good youtube links and it's near the top, so it's easy to find.

tall fighters are murderous at distance and yeah from what i've seen their knees are a bitch. you should definitely try MT.

Do what you want, don't use your size as a condition one way or another.

why not? you can't argue that tall fighters are better at stand up styles rather than at grappling styles for instance? so if he says himself he feels uncomfortable at hip throws that by far are JJ basics let him try MT and see which suits him better.

Default hey thanks everyone

i really appreciate the advice.

I liked japanese jujitsu but i felt like i could not make it my own and made me start to hate class.

its almost impossible to hip throw someone someone almost 1 to 2 feet shorter than you and it seemed like the only throws i could use were a couple of leg throws and some sacrifce throws which would involve me throwing myself on the ground.

i felt like shaq in a class of people the size of jet li.

but anyway, thank you for all of your insights

P.S: the reason why i asked is because my neighbor in my dorm is from thailand he does MT since he was five

Ask if you can train with the bigger guys. You mentioned that you were a blue belt in jujitsu, right? Doesn't your class split up into two weight divisions? If you have enough guys, that's usually the 180+ plus crowd = heavy. When I trained in grappling, I got to grapple against guys like yourself being at the lower end of that weight category and I got my moneys worth...lol.

If you're switching arts, ever consider karate?

At your size, it would probably be easy to knockout most with one strike and karate is designed for that purpose.

I am the big guy. no one comes close to me in my japanese jujitsu class

i have tried karate. i am a red belt. I was doing a system that did jujitsu and karate. But there was less emphasis on karate since my instructor was 5th dan jujitsu and 2nd dan karate.

i liked it, but ill admit it; i am envious of you muay thai guys. U all kno your limit and capacity so u kno how ur progressing.

but my instructor in MT says this art was made for me and i believe him. every technique is coming along fine. i cant wait till i learn the flying knee since i can jump high. (no more refinements for my size or having techniques that are not the best choice) SO I AM EXTREMELY happy

THANK you everyone
