It's supposed to cheer up the fighter.
IF the fighter is convinced his trainer is a master magician by the great feats of "I got your broken septum", and "look what's behind your cauliflour ear", he has greater confidence to go into the next round.

god those scalp and facial lacerations bleed like a bitch. Usually there's not too much real danger...but damn...they look bad, don't they?

...ok...you don't get to corner me if I start fighting again.

superglue would work. I've superglued knife cuts working in a restaurant...seems to work pretty well...when I got stabbed in the face, the plastic surgeon (I was SO lucky they had one on staff, right then, and I HAD health insurance) superglued it inbetween stitches, and it worked for awhile.

This is not a good day for elbows. They're leaving impressive looking cuts on guys who are clearly still concious and "up for it."

Bang 'em into the lower half of the head and go for the KO.

An elbow across the middle of the face is even uglier.

I once trained with a guy who got assaulted over a dispute and used an elbow to defend himself. The accused, a taller fellow, got face to face with him and he ax-elbowed him down the face. Against someone whose your height, it opens a gash on the forehead above the eyes, but against someone taller (depending on how much taller) it can hit the nose.

Dammit people, let's be civil to each other and keep this in the ring

Oh geesus!
I know they use cold things like small metal plates to reduce swelling, but does it work for cuts like those?

I would imagine the coin is being used as a point of reference for the size of the gash in this case. Just my 2 cents (pun intended).
