Was chatting a friend recently and he said they did around 6 rounds of sparring per session and he wanted to do more.
Seems to vary greatly, partly depending on what people actually wanting to do. How long do you spend sparring in each class or session. In london where i train we usually do 12-15 x 3 minute rounds, where i train in thailand we do 2 X 30 minute rounds or 4 X 15 minute rounds. other places ive trained at vary alot as well.

In my gym in the UK i have the guys sparring most of the night(15-20 rnds) but not every session, however we spar in various ways ie,punch vs knee, kick vs punch, pressure fighter vs mover etc etc, plus we clinch only for 15mins.
The gyms ive trained in in Thailand that have only Thai boys training hardly spar at all, only clinch and sometimes boxing only. The gyms ive seen in Thailand with a lot of foriegners training tended to have them sparring with each other for size etc. Personally i belive we have to spar in the west much more often than they do in Thailand because we fight much less often. |

yeah i agree its important to spar alot more in the uk, the sparring ive done in thailand has often been less intense than in the uk though it has varied a fair bit from one gym to another. when we spar in the uk the rounds change between only boxing, only clinch, only kicking and everything. Do you have an emphasis at your gym fire cobra, such as more boxing or kick or knee orientated or is it everything equally?

Ghost,
I like the guys to be well rounded in all the Muay Thai skills, however it depends on what competiton we may be competing in,as you know in the UK we only do full thai rules aprox 5% of the time so elbow and knee to head are not so important to be trained, which is a real shame because that and plam are my favourite areas. We often tend to box spar a bit more because the chances of meeting a good boxer in the Uk rings is quite high. Actually i think the Uk is improving in Real Muay Thai quite rapidly lately mainly because people (such as yourself) go and study in Thailand,i have spent more than 2.5 years there in more than 15 camps and im still learning!. |

Sparring is such good conditioning, and next to a fight, it's the best form of training. It does vary place to place, but go with it and see what happens. Adjust accordingly.

You're right; we did 5-6 x 3 minute rounds twice a week, with one more day of round-robbin style sparring that took up most of the class. Fresh guy each round.

to elaborate a little a typical training routine at my old gym was 30 minutes of ropeskipping, with added drills, such as lifting you knees till they form a 90 degree angle, kicking each leg forward(kinda like a frontkick/teep) etc, then 30 minutes of pad work, and then 30 minutes sparring.
