Simply put, you use the appropriate method for the appropriate action, meaning for self defense, you use the muay method devised for that military muay thai. Ring Muay Thai is for the ring and has the attributes and development for that, the conditioning, techs carry over into military muay or use bare knuckle muay which is more of a martial art with hundreds of techs/self defense apps or use the weapons/empty hand methods. Its pretty clear. People will tell you and sell you anything but for me I use the methods which are all there for the appropriate application.

i have studied mt for a while now, not for the ring but for the street, and i can tell you, if you cross train in a weapon based art, Kali for example you will have a very strong base for street defence, if you join this club then you will learn your body in a deadly and brutal way.
my advice would be to concentrate on your basic strikes, this way on the street you will have an awesome all round ability, remember, a full power teep to the kneecap or sternum followed up by some elbows and knees to the face and head will mean the dude will be out for good

Thanks for the responses (Doug I like your explanation). I started MT 2 weeks ago and it's great. It seems to be exactly what I was looking for and I don't think that I ever trained this hard in my life.

hard isn't it? absolutely awesome though and it gives a very solid base to cross train

It's the fighter that defines an art, not the other way around.

Well said.

The true strength of Muay Thai lies in commitment and good teaching. It shows the fundementals of using your body as a weapon.

But its only as effective as the person "claiming" to know/understand the art. Otherwise your just a bragger who has no concept of what real fighting/art is.

Ive been involved in boxing,BJJ,karate and of course Muay Thai. And by far MT has the ability to separate the "men from the boys".
