If the person does not know how to fight even a soccer kick with some hard shoes will take their leg out.
I do full contact karate and Muay Thai. The way I see it that in self defense you do not really want to use kicks much. You have more control with fists and in the clinch. The kicks that are affective are low kicks and thai style is the best for them. Mid or high kicks I would do with shoes. You can easily shin kick someone out who doesn't know anything. Depending on the shoe it is overall stronger than the shin in my opinion. If you are wearing sandals I would use shins. If you are wearing tennis or running shoes then I would use the shoe for mid kicks. High kicks are risky but they better with the shoe. If you have steal toe shoes then yeah the shoes.

I'd still take the shin kick over the foot any day, at least I can condition my shins. |

It doesn't have anything to do with power, it has to do with rebounding energy, TKD kicks pull back after impact before rebound occurs. Thai kicks follow through but suffer from rebound. It's Impulse vs. fluid force. Don't hit hard things with Thai kicks, or you end up like Retired did. Don't aim for muscle impairment with TKD kicks, because that's not what their for. Thai kicks suck to get hit buy, but TKD kicks shatter your face. I've seen instep kicks break orbital sockets, cheeks and cause knockouts. I've seen MT kicks drop fighters and knock out people. But they are different. They have different mechanics aim at different targets You wouldn't use a TKD round kick to the thigh because it wouldn't do much, but hit the skull and it's a different story. Of course instep kicks are generally only for point sparring, Ball of foot kicks are for throwing full force. (oh and TKD also can use the shin as a striking tool for their kicks as well)

As for kicks, I'd kick with my shin (shoes or not) because that's what I know. If I'd ever trained savate, maybe I'd say differently, but I haven't. |
