Default muay thai equipment

Hello All,

I am going to start taking muay thai classes soon and I was hoping to find out a little bit about the type of equipment that is generally used in training.

What do you guys recommend for someone getting started with muay thai?

Okay...the essentials are:
bag gloves
hand wraps
thai shorts
shin pads
steel cup or shock doctor cup.
jump rope
(thai boxing liniment is kind of optional...it's essentially the same as any other anti-bruise formula- aLOT of camphor and menthol...it works really well and helps you to recover after taking a few heavy shots)

Then down the road when you decide it's a worthwhile investment:
belly pad
thai pads
focus mitts
headgear

and maybe some sort of heavy bag...tear drop bags are good for knees, pole bags are great if you can set them up...bannana bags are good for working kicks, or a normal heavy bag for working everything except leg kicks.

Then...if you decide you like just having stuff around for the novelty and because you get a little overzealous on ebay...
mongkon
prajeat
thai amulets (sak yant, takrud, etc.)
books, videos, etc.

Krabi Krabong items??? such as Mae Sok, Dharb...etc.

I find muay thai to be really cool, and I get carried away with the culture and history...and spiritual aspects of it to the point of trying to collect anthropolical ethnologies on thai culture with an emphasis on the syncronisity of buddhism and indigenous animisitic practices and hindu holy books that manifest themselves in the rituals of muay thai....

So...I'm kind of obessessed.
All you really need are what I listed in the first segment, or as designated by your instructor/kru/coach. (sometimes they want you to buy school shorts and package deals...which sometimes can be a bargain, sometimes a rip off.) My advice...shop around.

Thank you! You just saved me hours of research. Much obliged. I can't wait to get into the sport, I'm very excited about it.

If you are just starting out I would keep it real nice and simple all you really need are some hand wraps, a good pair of bag gloves and anther set of boxing gloves say about 12oz-18oz. Personally that is all we make new people purchase when joining. All the other things the gym should supply you with such as jump ropes, head gear, shin pads (u may want your own for sanitary reasons) etc etc.....

Don't go out spending all your money on gear.....take that extra time and use it in the gym training. I personally think fairtex has the best gear around but to each his own there are many sites online to buy gear so definatly shop around if you can.

Hey dont buy Jack until you decide Muay Thai is for you as already said.... wraps, short, t -shirt and gum shield is all you need to start off....

When you decide its for you invest in your own gear...I like twins stuff...but it does cost..try and get somebody who is returning from Siam to get it over there for you as it is much cheaper...if hes a friend he will!!
