does muay thai have uppercuts, side kicks or back hand punches? how do i do a thai front kick (where you lift your foot up and push the opponent back)?
p.s. thai low roundhouse kicks really do work. ![]() |

I am assuming by the questions you ask that you are not actually training at a Thai Boxing gym. Yes there are uppercuts, and im not totally sure what you mean when you say side kicks, but if its what i think, then no, not traditionally, and as far as spinning back fists, i have seen them done before in a couple fights, but what i would say you would see more is a spinning back elbow. Doing a front thrust with either leg is fairly simple but requires much practice. Im not sure how to explain it well or give it any justice by words on paper. Buy some FAIRTEX Muay Thai videos

muay thai- uppercuts yes, side kicks no, spinning back fists rare depending on the camp but the dutch seem to use them well.
Dont think of it as a front kick think of it as a push kick. like when someone tries to tie you up and you use your hands (palms) to push them back. Lift yor leg up push out using the bottom of the foot not the ball (like with a front kick). Extend your hips forward (dont lean back) and push your opponent back. Practice on a heavy bag. The impact doesnt need to snap the bag like a front kick does, but remember after contact extend the hips through and push the bag back. It should swing back.

MY GYM IS RAN BY AN EX FIGHTER FROM THAILAND..
I CAN TELL YOU THAT SPINNING BACK PUNCHES DO WORK AND ARE TAUGHT.. THEY HAVE THE SAME AFFECT AS.. BACK SPINNING ELBOW.. VERY EFFECTIVE.. BACK SPINNING KICK.. VERY SNEAKING... BACK SPINNING BACK HAND.. VERY POWERFUL.. THERE IS MORE BUT NO NEED TO DROP THE BOMB ON YOU FOOLS.. IF HE AINT FROM THAILAND IT AINT AUTHENTIC.. JUST SAYING.. IT'S LIKE .. WHEN YOU TEACH AMERICANS.. THEY LIKE ADDING THEIR OWN TWIST TO MUAY THAI OR TAKING OUT SHIT.. THE MORE TOOLS YOU HAVE THE BETTER... ..JUST TEACH IT STRAIGHT UP AND THEN LET THE STUDENT US WHAT HE WANTS IT'S LIKE A BJJ TEACHER NOT TEACHING LEG LOCKS.. IT'S A BURN OUT.. I HAVE THE LUCK THAT IN LOS ANGELES.. THERE IS TRAINERS THAT ACUTALLY BATTLED IN THAILAND WHERE IT STARTED AND KEPT THE SAME STYLE OF TEACHING.. WHEN YOU TRY TO LEARN MUAY THAI FROM A MIXED FIGHTER YOU WONT GET THE SAME.. EXCEPT FOR BASS RUTTEN.... I WOULD LOVE TO LEARN FROM HIM.. BUT OTHER THEN THAT.. FORGET ABOUT.. ASK YOUR TEACHER TO TEACH YOU EVERYTHING.. AND REMEMBER THE SPINING BACK ELBOW.. DOESN'T JUST GO HORIZONTAL.. (EXCUSE MY SPELLING) IT CAN GO VERTICAL, DIAGNAL.. ... THE BACK SPIN IS DANGEROUS.. BELIEVE THAT!!

Muay Thai has all of the above.
Uppercuts, definately. Rambah M-16 is a BEAST with his uppercut combinations (is he still fighting?) Side Kicks, absolutely. However, the Side Kick as most people think of it is rarely used in Muay Thai. Its just another version of the Push Kick, or Teep. The Thai version of the Side Kick does not rotate so completely over because the fighter needs to remain in a position that he can easily recover, defend, or continue his attack from. Backfist strikes, Muay Thai has these too! As stated, they are not used very often, but they are part of the arsenal. crazyjoe... I have to disagree with your statement: "IF HE AINT FROM THAILAND IT AINT AUTHENTIC.." Though I understand what you mean, this isn't always the case. There are a number of non-Thai's that teach authentic Muay Thai. Heck, I actually know some non-Thai's that teach more traditional Muay Thai than some Thai instructors I've met. You have to judge each instructor on an individual basis. Khun Kao |
