Default drills.

I'd like to get some imput from all of you that workout in all those gyms out there. I live in a small town and there is no ma schools (well there's one, I went for a year but when the instructor left the students who took over really wrecked the school, so i left) I've just been going it alone and going to some thai camps (weekend seminars once or twice a year) for the past three years. Anyway I finally found a guy who could teach karate.
(shotokan)(yes he is a certified instructor) it took some convincing, but he's willing. I know it's shotokan, but I need to get back into sparring, and I'm tired of my heavy bag in the back yard.

So before this gets to wordy, he's asked me to come up with some drills,Ive came up with several, but I would like to have a few more. specialy sparring drills. So what are some of your favorite sparring drills? I would appreciate your imput. Thank you.

Question

I don't wanna sound ignorant but what exactly do you mean by " sparring drills"? Do you mean partner drills, or drills on equipment, etc. You have to be a little more specific, that way I don't give you useless crap that you already know or don't really need, etc. Once you give a more accurate picture, I can probably hook you up.

Yes partner drills. Things you might be doing to improve timing and rhythm when sparring. Don't worry if I might know them, you might have a different twist to them. I would really appreciate it.

Some of my favorite drills are what I like to call "dual fire" drills. The drills are quite simple, follow these basic guidelines:
( Head gear and gloves are recommended.)

1.) You and your partner face each other.
2.) Preselect a technique ( let's say a jab.), this will be your technique to focus on for the time period, number of sets, etc.
3.) You throw a jab at your partners face ( you are actually trying to hit him) your partner should counter with a defensive technique, ( such as a high parry ) and then return a counter jab of his own.
4.) You defend yourself from the jab with the appropiate technique, ( the parry ) and then return the jab.
5.) Set up a rhythm back and forth, but not playful, you have to be serious about the repetition of the technique, and of correct execution.

You can work any techniques with this drill ( crosses, hooks, uppercuts, backfists, combinations, etc,.) When you are attacking you should focus on correct technique and timing, don't forget speed. ( Power can also be developed but that's at your discretion.) The defending partner should be working on learning to identify the motions of the attack ( useful information, might as well develop it if you have the chance.) And to cover properly. This drill develops timing, distancing, and offensive and defensive techniques. When you get better at it then do it while employing footwork, use different defensive techniques, employ different moves altogether ( You use jab- crosses, your partner uses a high-low hook combo, etc. ) If you have any questions then feel free to PM me. By the way, I learned this drill from one of Marco Lala's tapes, I suggest you look into it. Hope this helps.

I've done drills similar to this as a warm up, But honestly never implemented all the techniques other than jab, right cross, teep, and low/middle kicks. Also never employed foot work. this will be good Thanks.
