Hi
I do Freestyle Kickboxing which incorporates Muay Thai kicks but we don't do shin conditioning coz my instructor says he wants to be able to walk properly when he's 50. Anyways, i'd like to do it and wondered how you guys go about it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated

I do it the hard way.
-I swing my bag at home high up sideways in the air and when it comes back to me i throw a big low thai round kick,gving it full power.Do it on both sides.After that you can't walk anymore and your shins are tomato red!!!! -kick everything you see:doors,trees,poles be imaginative. -Practice leg blocks with a partner and block with the shins,do it slowly first then increase power. -roll a bottle of glass on your shins.In fact it's not rolling,but rather pushing it into your shins while gliding it forwards (can't really explain it in words).this will kill your nerves HAHAHA -Kick the coconut tree!!!!!!!!

then after doing all that take a baseball bat have someone swing it at your shins as hard as they can. and keep doing it until either one breaks.
what i do is that i kick a my heavy bag bag ever time i train by myself. each leg a hundred times. its not that many times really. tell your instructor he'll beable to walk when he is 50 if does what i do. do not roll a bottle over your shins. i'm sure someone will inform you what will happen if you improperly train your shins

I do it like you angel,but it's not rolling it's just pushing into the nerves to flatten them.Actually i don't do it very much i prefer the hard way,it's more painful!!!!!

yea i use a rolling pin, its does work brilliantly, when i started i did rolled my shins whilest having a bath that way when they get too sore u put them in the warm water, after a while you find that you can block a lot easier, although with certain people kicking you it can still hurt a bit

Thanks guys. So basically, I should be rolling something hard like a bottle or rolling pin over my shins to flatten/deaden the nerves and do some thai power kicks against a punch/kick bag.
How long would it take to condition them to a reasonable level doing this. Also i've read that not being able to walk properly if you condition your shins is a fallacy. Some say its true, some dont. I'd rather not do it if its gonna cause trouble later in life such as arthritis etc.

NO mate DONT roll anything on your shins or whack them with thing's because all your doing is deadening the nerves & anybody that say's different is just talking complete bollox & has never been trained properlly themselves or with someone that has trained traditionally in thailand, as all they use in thailand are the thaipads & the heavy bag, anything else just causes trouble later in life.
if you want to deaden the nerves in your shins so you dont get the feedback of pain then just build up your power & repetitions on the pads & bag as this WILL deaden the nerves and harden the shin when the callus grows over damaged shin bone. This rolling pin stuff is just an old fable that was taught to the likes of japanese tourist/trainers coming into thailand but if you want to THINK that your shin is hard until you connect with something hard then carry on. It will take time & hardwork but that's part of the game, & if there was a magic formula like this then they would tell you at the thaiboxing gyms which they dont. |

If an individual were unable to get there mitts on a full length bag what would you suggest at home? It's hard to find willing strangers to hold thaipads while you wail on them... PS: I live in an apartment so I can't hang one and I don't have the dinero to buy a corner stand. Article I found

I started by letting my pitbull puppy run into my head while he was playing, graduated to letting my sparring partners use 8 oz gloves, let Master Chai elbow me in the head a few times at seminars, and then moved to full power knees to my temporal region. Oops, misread another thread title, sorry

This actually works pretty well, I learned this when I was taking Meibukan Goju-Ryu which the first hour of class was nothing but body hardening and conditioning. Get 200 thin wire hangers and cut the bottoms off of it (remove the rubber if they have them, you want it to be just plain metal). Then take two fat rubber bands and put them over each end and then roll one of the rubber bands down to about an inch away from the other one, giving you a whisk-looking thing. Use that to condition your shins and forearms, and as you get tougher you just roll the rubber band up a little bit each time and it'll make it tighter and stronger. It works remarkably well and you can go far with it, when I saw Wade thrashing his shins with six 1/2" steel rods, I knew I still had a ways to go

i was actually just looking into this.. from what i know.. u shouldnt hit anything harder than ur shin on ur shin or u have a risk of causing tiny stress fractures which will cause long term damage.. pads and bags work well.. at home if u aint got alot to work with.. try a rice bag or a tire.. start with 100 softish kicks just to get the shins numb.. thats when u start pounding it.... about the bottle and rolling pins.. i have no clue if they work.. but i perfer actually kicking things.. uhh.. and dont kick just anything ull hurt urself.. doors lamps computers ect... dont kick anything harder than u shin!
