Instead of arguing over which style is better, would it be possible to combine the two arts and form the best kickboxing style ever ?

Many people have failed to realize that San Shou ACTUALLY is MUAY THAI!!! You're in doubt? Just go watch how San Shou guys kick. (and sometimes how they perform knee strikes) Many Chinese martial artists claim that San Shou is NOT MUAY THAI, but HEY!!! How often do San Shou figthers pull their "Kung Fu" moves on the ring, hmm?
Yes, I'm curious to how many knees Cung Le throws since in San Shou rules you're not allowed to throw knees! I have never seen Cung Le once throw a knee! San Shou is basically intl. rules kickboxing combined with throws/take downs. Yes, they're using Muay Thai "style" kicks but they don't elbow nor knee in competition. San Shou fighters are good at throws and takedowns but I haven't seen Cung Le do a fight yet with kneed allowed.

Actually, I just saw a K-1 event on ESPN2 that Cung Le fought in under San Shou rules. The announcers explicitly said kneeing was allowed but Cung Le (or his opponent for that matter) didn't do much of it. His entire fight consisted of mostly takedowns (got him some easy points cuz the other guy, Petit, seem to fall for them every time) and scattered punches/kicks. He was impressive nonetheless. Don't know how he'd fair against a seasoned mixed martial artist. Seems like a good deal of his takedowns could be neutralized by a good sprawler (like Chuck Liddell). However, this is always easier said than done in the ring.

Default le vs. pettit fight

you sure that knees were allowed? a former sparring partner of mine Brian Jones Jr. fought pettit here in western WA a few months back and they kneed the hell out of eachother. I've seen the fight you're referring to but I don't remember knees being allowed. hmm....

You said in another post that San shou is shit KF. So what gives now? Still token on the pipe huh?

Honestly I am really impressed with San shou and think it is a breath of fresh air coming out of the Chinese martial arts. It’s a simple no nonsense MA that is direct and to the point I like it! I think it makes a very good self-defense system (at least the way it’s taught in the Chinese military).

silapathai,

I'm almost certain that knees were allowed unless the commentators were confused (could very well be!). They mentioned during the fight that Pettit should be kneeing Le when he attempts the takedown because they knew how effective Pettit's knees were from watching him in previous fights.

Yes, SanShou is a shit kungfu, but it is a part of KungFu, and all of the shit kungfu - Muay Thai is the worst, so SanShou will win rather than Muay Thai.....

note:
but there is still worsiest than worst: and that is Karate and Tae Kwon Do

Hey sherwinc go to Thailand and fight a Thai boxer and see how shity it is! I bet you wouldn't do it because you are to scared. They would have to carry you out in a stretcher. Can your alphabets spell that? While you do your fancy kung fu wing chun hands a thai boxer will break your leg with a low kick the clinch and knock your smelly scared ass out with a knee to your face.

Convinced......

I bet that if he saw the actual Muay Thai fighting art (not the ring sport), he would have a different view. Go to MuayThailand.com and educate yourself sherwinc.

point vs knockout. i havent seen the sanshou guys knocking anyone out, but they get alot of points for takedowns. then the guy doesnt want to hit the sanshou guy b/c he will get thrown. anyone seen a sanshou guy win against a mma guy that will lock out when on the floor? I havent yet. Not really looking either. Both good I'd say for different situations. Junfan mentality.

I did muay thai for 5 years and have done SanShou for 3 years and find the throws to be seriously disabling in a real encounter and also prefer a highly developed side kick rather than the thai round house, why?, direct linear, far more difficult to see coming than the circular roundhouse.
I have no problems with you thinking that Sanshou is tops I think the throws and takedowns ads a very important dimension to fighting. I think it’s a great sport and a solid MA for SD.

There are good things to say about the sidekick and the round house however I seem to score better with the round kick and for power both are good. I find a good round kick to thigh or knee to be very effective in the street because it’s easy to land and most untrained people can’t handle it.

Quote:
Plus, I reckon the shin conditioning is stupid and unhealthy. Also, on the street who would be dumb enough to clinch someone which would blind you to a handheld knife coming in below.
Shin conditioning if done right is not necessarily unhealthy but far to many take to far. And landing a hard thrown shin unto someone’s knee (as in leg shield), well now that’s unhealthy.

I love SanShou & seriously hope it gets the far better recognition that it deserves. Reading thru so many posts on here about how ""muay thai kicks all ass forever"" suggests to me a very easily led race of peeps, until you learn some of the far cleverer stuff that SS has to offer, don't comment.

Finally, look at how vulnerable a MT fighter is when he is on the ground, you know, when you see the referee stand in to protect etc... baloney Muay Thai.......................Muay thai is for fa8gots.
MT is still a valid and solid MA I think the SS is going in a good direction though. Tom is right though, comparing MAs gets you nowhere because there is no answer to which is best. What’s best for you may not be the best for someone else, and just because he/she practices a different style doesn’t necessarily make ‘em any less effective as individuals.

The clinch should only be held for a knee or two it needs to be fast and powerful then break away with an elbow or a push into a round kick. Not to many guys will be able to draw a knife and use it while being forcibly kneed in the face or ribs.

A natural reaction to being clinched is to draw your arms in to protect, only a highly skilled and trained knife fighter can overcome this natural response to draw and stab while his head is being pushed down into a knee.

And if you are fighting a highly trained and skilled knife fighter then you are in a big heep of trouble to begin with!

my first blow is a very illegal and a foul to the shit rules of them, my purpose of practicing martial arts is for health, hobby and a self-offense.... maybe i'm glad to accept a trophy when i join but instead of a trophy my reward is for them to bring me inside the jail cause i kill my opponent in just a few moves......

GET MY POINT????????
