One subject that is rarely mentioned is "cardiac standstiil" after a blow to the chest. Simply, a blow to the chest, at a certain time in the cardiac cycle, will result in electrical chaos, [V-fib], and in a short time, death. It's not an infrequent occurance in Thailand, but because of a culturral aversion to autopsy,it is rarely, if ever, listed as a cause of death. Thai boxers are esp. vulnerable, because knees are "allowed" if not encouraged. Anyway, if you spar or compete, be aware and please take precautions. Sincerely, Chato

Blows to the chest aren't the only way to die in the ring, if you're going to fight in the ring you are at risk for all kinds of things. It's the nature of the beast. Not much you can do to take precautions against knee to the chest during a fight, it's not like anyone ever WANTS to get hit, you either see it coming and defend from it or you don't see it and you eat it.

Odalay Chato....you are correct about the possibility of arrest. It stems from producing an R on T wave phenomenon, much like a malignant PVC. Maybe we should all get AICD's implanted before we get into the ring, or pre-game with a bolus of Lidocaine.

BTW if you are the same chato I think you are...good Thai pad workout the other day...

R on T wave phenomenon occurs in the cardiac cycle. When the ventricles contract they need a certain amount of time to repolarize, before they can contract again, this is called the relative refractory period. If they are stimulated to contract again too soon (R wave falling on T wave) they can be thrown into a chaotic, disorganized rhythm known as ventricular fibrillation. When this happens a "cardiac arrest" has occured and one must be shocked out of it or stay dead.
