mate all you can do is literally kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick and kick............
.......... and then after that do some more kicking, nah seriously though you need to kick a heavy leather bag constantly for about 3 months to notice a change, you are aiming to kill the nerves, and form calis on your shin bones, avoid hitting with hard objects just kick. Do reps after and before training, 100 on each leg, hard, you dont really need to whip them out fast just plant them in hard and if your shins bruise just keep kicking an dtry to ignore the pain. Thats all there is to it, just kick. |

Hey I still get bruises, I think some people just bruise easier like me. I don't experience pain on my shins like I used to but the bruising still occurs. I'll try to find a pic of me at Fairtex Muay Thai camp in Thailand where my shins are literally black from foot to tops of my knees. It didn't really hurt badly although bruises are tender, but it looked awful.

hmmmm I don't think strengthening your leg muscles will help lower the pain of shin kicking or remove bruising but maybe Cobra has some secret knowledge that I don't!

Heavy bag work is great for this. Start with a softer bag like a water bag and as S.Anucha said kick, kick, kick, and kick.
Then graduate to harder bag like a sand bag, this is what I use. It really gives the shins a work out. The bag I use is a 80 lbs'er but it's out side and the next few days after it's rained it's a 120lbs'er Remember if your bruising then your going to hard let the bruises heal up and start again this should be a gradual toughening. Putting bruises on top of bruises can cause long term problems you won’t want to be dealing with later. Also spar, spar, spars.

Hit the bag each day harder and harder with your shins and eventually hitting that bag will seem too easy. With a partner you and him /her can stand infront of each other and take turns shin kicking one another to outer thigh, inner thigh and to each other's shins. These are only a few ways you can make your shins stronger. Bruising however is unavoidable. |

im with mauythaifighter though a coke bottle works well too
then go to a metal clothesline and kick it soft dosnt hurt kick it harder till you find your threshhold then keep kicking it at that level till the build up is to much wait 10 minutes then roll the coke bottle up and down... though if you dont want to take it that far just kick a heavy bag a lot lot lot lot... or get one of those heavey duty sand bags hang it on a wall and kick that .a lot a lot a lot.. note or warning dont kick the steel pole as hard as possible first time i still have a dint in my leg from doing that 8 years later... ![]()

"Get a broom stick handle or bar and roll or hit lightly your shins everyday then after some time go harder and harder and eventually you too will have rock solid shins."
Ok, firstly if you listen to this advice then expect problems in your shins when you get older.... its very bad for your shins. Muay Thai fighter shows the apptitude of a school boy who hasnt lost his virginity yet so I would stay clear of his advice! ![]() When you roll a hard object on you shin bones what you are doing is killing nerves not toughening the shins at all, so then when you do go to kick you wont feel pain but your shins wont be tough! When you strike you shins with a bottle then you are actually doing the opposiste, the hard object is denser than your shin bone so therfor damages it not toughen. Theres a book called "the art of fighting" a guy who helped write the book posts sometimes here, Khun Khao I think is his name, it has some very good advice on that subject, in Thailand they do not run around whacking bottles of their shins they only kick, bananna trees are not hard like bopttles andthey only kicked them because thats all they had! Heavy bag, kick it a lot = tough shins after some time. The only real way to toughen your shins are by kicking a hard bag, thehard bag is hard but not harderthan your shin bone so doesnt damage your shin bone but is still hard enough to touyghen them. Trust me ignore Muay Thai fighters advice, he is full of misleading advice. |

i think your advice is correct i'll just stick to kicking the bag and go along to heavier bags later on.
I think muay thai advice is a bit extreme and its more common sense to steer slearof whacking my shind on metal posts, this is because we are human beings and bones can be broke. But i not sure about rolling broom stick i'l have a go at that anyway

Kick the heavy bag and slowly work your way up to a bag filled with sand. Couple that with a steady diet of pad work and you'll get all the shin conditioning you need. Forget about the sticks and bottles and what-not.

s.anucha all your realy doing when you "toughen" your shins is kill the nerves or reduce there sensativaty or just raise your pain barrier there realy isnt anyway to actualy strenghten the shin bone agreed.... without some medical operation i havnt heard of anyway
repeated kicking of a heavey bag is the same thing just slower longer more drawn out process and in truth yes it would hurt less but each to their own it is just personal advise anyway as is yours id advise against critisising someone just because there view differs from yours
